I'm building a NAS + HTPC system to store my pictures, important files and movies. The main purpose of the system is storage for my pictures + important files (The HTPC part is an added advantage). I'm planning to have four 3TB WD RED drives in Raid 1 to store the pictures and important files.

I have not got a drive to install the OS yet. I was wondering whether it makes sense to get a 3 TB WD green drive for the OS and use that to store my movies (This wont have a backup and I don't really mind loosing the movies, more worried about loosing pictures).

Is this a possible setup? a WD Green drive for OS and movies and four 3 TB WD Red drives in Raid 1.

the WD Green drive is not made to be used as a primary drive, it will work for a while and then eventually fail.

Get a WD Blue as your OS drive.

as for the four WD Red I think you want to run them in RAID 10 which will give you 6GB of storage plus the safety of the mirror.

Thanks for the info on the WD green drives Emerald. Will look into going with a WD Black or a WD blue for the OS drive (Might probably go with the black because of higher capacity and prolly store the movies on that)

I was thinking of going with Ubuntu + plex. I don't think freenas supports flex. I don't have any laptop drives around, the case I got has room for six 3.5 inch drives. I plan to use up 4 of them now and probably use the other 2 in the future. Installing the OS on a flash drive would mean that I leave my options open :)
