Does WD Elements Portable or My Passport work with TV's (mkv files)?

Can I plug these hard drives to TV's USB port and play 1080p mkv files from the hard drives? This works with most of my old HDD's (Elements desktop) and USB sticks, but not with all models.

Can't say for sure. But if other HDD's worked in your TV, then there is no reason why a WD drive wont.

The only problem that I can see is if your TV doesn't support NTFS.

If this is the case you will have to format the drive to FAT32. But this means that you cant put single files over 4GB on it.

Or there is exFAT, but compatibilty for that is rare

TV supporst NTFS. The other HDD's have external power units and My Passports take power from USB port so I was thinking if there's any difference in that. I have Sandisk USB sticks and their 16GB model works with the TV but the 32GB model don't which is wierd since they are even the same series and only the size is different.

Sony and Samsung. I just tested my friends WD My Passport few minutes ago and the TV didn't recognize it, but neither did my PC laptop. That might be because he uses the HDD with Mac?

Hey there, pena!

Both the WD My Passport and the WD Elements should work without any issues with your TV. As long as it supports NTFS-formatted drives, you shouldn't encounter any issues. If, at some point, the external fails to be recognized by the TV, then you should consider backing up the data and re-formatting it.
You can refer to this tutorial from our knowledge base about partitioning & formatting (in case you need assistance with the steps): http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=ZS1kgM
Other than that, @BigBlueHouse is right. If your friends' WD My Passport was formatted for Mac OS, then you most definitely won't be able to pick it up by either the TV or the Windows computer (due to the HFS+ format).

Hope I was helpful, too. Best of luck! :)
