Custom lighting questions

I'm building a custom case and would like to have lights to go with it.
My idea is a mostly black acrylic case with frosted white or clear accents.
Behind those I would put lights that could change colors and patterns depending on certain conditions.
I would like the lights to be different colors depending on who is logged in. I would also like the lights to be completely off when the system is not on. When it is in standby I would like it to have a low slow pulse like its sleeping. When a user is signed in it would go through a different pattern or just be on.
Is there something already out there for this kind of thing? What connection does it use?
If I need to write code for it that's fine, I just need to know the language. And if there is any type of UI that would be great.
Lastly where can I get it and has anyone had any experience with this kind of project?

I dont know about doing that by programming, but the NZXT Hue RGB lighting is a custom lighting solution, that has all the features you require and is quite cheap also, but the main drawback is you have to change it manually every time. Coming to your question yes you can make stuff like this but it is quite difficult as the program would not be executed on your computer but a separate micro controller, and this would be expensive too. So your best bet is to go with the NZXT hue, or ask a hardcore tech hobbyist to do as you require.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll use this as a fallback, but I was really hoping that there would be a program out there that would be automatic.
