Hi guys, I'm new here and this is my first post, and my first build so please bear with me. I'm here because I'd like some opinions and advice on this AMD build I have created. The purpose is purely gaming and the aim is to obviously make it last as long as possible while keeping my options open for future upgrading. I'm aiming for as high of frame rate and graphics settings as possible with mostly FPS games like BF3/4, COD, CS, etc. The price cap for this build is $1,000. I already have 2 hard drives, an operating system, mechanical keyboard, gaming mouse, sound system, monitor and optical drive so those components will not be included in the build;

mobo- MSI 990FXA-GD80 V2 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
CPU- AMD FX-8350 Vishera 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor FD8350FRHKBOX
Memory- G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL
PSU- CORSAIR CX series CX750 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU
Tower- Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case with Upgraded USB 3.0
Graphics card- MSI Gaming N770 TF 2GD5/OC GeForce GTX 770 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support Video Card

This brings the build total to $959 USD which is right where I am at. I considered the AMD FX-9370 Vishera, but I'm not sure if the extra $50 justifies it. Please let me know if I've left anything out. Any help and advice is appreciated =)

Thanks!!

Will do thank you!

What mother board would you advise in place of the MSI?

Asus Sabertooth Gigabyte UD5 or UD7 or Asrock extreme 9 all 990FX . The Sabertooth was only $9 more than the GD80 last time I checked, I or actually my daughter has the GD80 and although it is feature rich board we ran into the voltage issues with the CPU which seriously hampers OC.

Well, he doesn't need a i7 for gaming. Unless you can make use for the hyperthreading for gaming (Which won't happen for a while) then stick with either a i5 level or a good AMD CPU.

i7 has a higher single core result than FX 8350

So does the i5 4670k by a small bit.

i7 4770(K) is pretty future proof
But here FX 8350 is fine !

An i7 is pointless for gaming. An i5 perform the same and is much cheaper. The i7 will be out of date before games can even take full advantage of Hyper threading. An i7 is simply a waste of money for a gaming computer.

And you can save 100 bucks on something good for your build!

Very good posts guys, I appreciate it. I am debating over an I5 core now. I am not bias towards either brand, its just a matter of which company can give me the most performance under $1000 purely for gaming. I have a friend who works at Intel as well and can get me any CPU for half price which is making me rethink my build. I think whether I go with an I5 core or the 8350fx, both will be good choices as far as I can tell. Again, purely a gaming build to last as long as possible.

Intel for gaming is better then AMD IMO. I'm not saying anything bad about AMD, but Programs I work with everyday, like Mastercam x7 for CNC, will eat all 6 cores from my xeon CPU. I'm currently building my brother a AMD build, because the 8350 has 8 cores. The i5 series is great for gaming. You're lucky if you can get half off from your friend lol, boxing day, all i5 4670 non k and K were all sold out haha.

i5 4670K-overclockable and i7 4770K will cut overall Watts of your rig .There are a lot of nice motherboards with H87 and Z87 chipsets:some inexpensive ones are :ASRock H87 Pro4 and Asus H87 Plus ATX.
For memory i suggest Corsair Vengeance 1.5V 1600MHz DDR3 240 pin

for ssd Samsung 840 EVO .

Alright well a few things have changed, I am able to get an I7 4770k core VERY cheap, less than half of normal price so I think, because of this, I'm going to build up an I7 core build. I know the I5 core is generally recommended but because the I7 is a bit more future proof and I can get it so cheaply I might as well go with it. Its going to be over my $1000 limit a little bit but so far I'm pretty happy with my build and the components and don't mind spending a few 100 more. It consists of the following so far -

CPU - Intel i7-4770K
Mobo - ASUS MAXIMUS VI HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-1600C9D-16GXM
GC - EVGA SuperClocked w/ ACX Cooling 02G-P4-2774-KR GeForce GTX 770 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support Video Card
Tower - Cooler Master HAF 922 - High Air Flow Mid Tower Computer Case with USB 3.0 and All-Black Interior

Still need a PSU and CPU cooler so suggestions for them and the build in general are appreciated. One of my friends is absolutely urging me to buy an SSD. Remember I already have an optical drive, peripherals, OS, and 2 HD's.

If you want this to be future proof you should be getting half the RAM, a less expensive motherboard, and a gtx780 not a gtx770. More RAM and easily be added later. MUCH cheaper then getting a whole new GPU. Also, that motherboard is for attaining award winning overclocks which I don't assume is the point of this build. You can save almost $100 and get all the same features and quality in a different motherboard.

Also, get ready for people to tell you how the i7 is not in any way future proof over an i5 and how it will be out of date before games even use hyper threading effectively at all.

For me the I7 is only $20 more, so its not a big deal.. I can go with an I5 if I wanted to...

Alright then what motherboard do you suggest? I'd just like to point out that 'You can save almost $100 and get all the same features and quality in a different motherboard' is kind of pointless if you're also suggesting a near $200 more GC...
