Can you sli 2 different brand cards, but with the same specs?

So I have a gigabyte r9 280x, with a core clock of 1ghz, And I want to add 2 msi r9 280x with the same core clock, and same specs as the gigabyte card. would this work, or are the cards only made to work with the same brand?

Yes - will work. But, of course you need to insure you have enough PSU power and your mobo can support
3 GPU's in CF.
