Hello everyone

I've just aquired a new HTPC with this specs:

  • ■ CPU: A10 6800K
    ■ Motherboard: Asrock FM2A75M-HD+
    ■ Cooler: Scythe Big Shuriken 2 rev B
    ■ Memory: 8GB DDR3 2133 G Skill Ares
    ■ Case: NOX Coolbay Slim

Whenever the system is idle, temps are about 30ºC, which seems good enough for the specs. Watching videos or browsing the internet doesn't drive too high, like 45º maximum.

When gaming, system shuts down at about 60ºC. This is some extrange behaviour, so I started to look in the internet and found out that the FM2A75M-ITX has some overheating issues. Could this be the reason for the shutdown?

I double checked that the thermal paste was well applied, the cooler is right on its place and this behaviour is the same even if the case is open, so it doesn't seem like an air flow problem.

If you need any more details, screen captures, photos or whatever I'll post them right away.

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I measured these temperatures with speedfan and GPUz

Those temps are high. The stock coolers which come with those CPU's are not very good especially in a small HTPC case.
If you send me the model of you case, your budget and country i will send a post a link to a better cooler:D

Hello jay2577, thanks for the answer I already have a non-stock cooler in the system: Scythe Big Shuriken 2 rev B.

Are those really high temperatures, I've seen in some reviews of the processor some OCs @ 96ºC, so I didn't think that they were extrange. What seems weird is a thermal shutdown at 60ºC, isn't it?

I also noticed that this only happens while on Windows (8.1 BTW), in the BIOS I saw it raise up to 66ºC and remain there without any trouble.

What are normal temperatures for this CPU while gaming? Would a better cooler help me out?

Are you talking core or socket temperature?

I wouldn't be happy at that temperature personally but your Scythe Big Shuriken 2 rev B is a good low profile cooler.
Can you fit any fans in that case?
If you could fit 2 with one intake and one exhaust it would improve things

I'm talking about core temperatures. Whenever they hit 60ºC the computer turns off in Windows, when at the BIOS it doesn't exceed 66ºC, but it does never turn off.

I don't think I can have any more fans in the case, at least not in a good spot, maybe in the bottom. The case already has an exhaust fan in the top, near the Scythe.

I don`t know what else I can try. Could it be that the cooler isn't well tightened in the socket, it was the first time I mounted a cooler that requires removing the motherboard's mechanism and I feared I could break something, should I have forced it until the end of the screws track? It's not any loose, anyway.

And, do you think that a 60ºC thermal shutdown is normal? Whay would happen with the stock cooler then? I wouldn't ever be able to reach windows desktop...
