Toshiba 1TB STOR.E portable hard drive light is not showing and it is not being picked up by my computer or laptop. Is my external drive dead or is the connection cable damaged?

Are you using windows or Mac?

If the drive is incorrectly formatted then the OS will not pick it up. i.e if it is formatted for mac it will not be visible on windows. As for the light. Is the drive making any noise when you plug it in?

Thanks for your reply.
I have had the device over a year with no problems. I use Windows on both Desktop and Laptop. The device is not making any noise when installed i.e. nothing happens or shows up, on the computer to indicate it is even installed, hence my query that maybe (in hope ) the cable is damaged. The cable is a usb 3.0 and the drive is powered by connection to the computer / laptop.

Hmm... Clearly this isnt a PC problem but instead a problem associated with the drive.

Is there a way you can swap the cable? I have a portable drive that has a removable USB cable that also powers it.

The 500mm length cable is removable with a standard connection into the computer but the connection into the drive is 3.0 , which I do not have as a spare.
Do you think it is a cable problem ?

Well, seeing as how the device will not power on, then it may just be the cable. Try picking up a spare cable and using it. If it still doesn't work then it is most likely the drive and you can return the cable.

That's the only thing I can think of.

Just out of curiosity, does the drive show up in device manager?

Start>Computer>Right Click>Manage>Storage

Alright, then that verifies that it is not being seen at all by the PC. So, the cable is once again the only possible solution.

Hi,
Update as promised. I took the external drive to an electronic store and asked if I could test my drive with a new cable as I thought my cable was damaged.
They were very helpful and opened a cable from the shelf and connected it to the drive and there system. I confirmed that the drive was dead as with a new cable the drive was not responding. Options are to check when I bought it to see if it is still under warranty, buy an new cover at €24.00, as the tec in the store thinks the connections at the face of the drive may be the issue? or finally forget about it and move on.
Thanks for your advice

If there is warranty, then send it in for a fix/replacement. MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT FIX IT! Make sure they send a new one. Once a drive has problems, its never good to trust it.

Other than that, its a good idea to just move on. I bought a new case as well for an internal drive I had and it didnt fix it, so I just returned the case. You can always try that. :)
