Hello Everyone,

I am trying to fix my mom's laptop. Currently what is happening is:

- Turns on
- Toshiba splash screen - Gives options for booting, utilities etc.
- "Windows Error Recovery" - Gives the option to Launch Startup Repair or Start Windows Normally
- Startup Repair gives a grey loading bar and then ends with a blank black screen and a movable cursor.
- Start Windows normally - Gives the windows loading screen and then times out and restarts after like 30 seconds.

Everything I have looked up online has mentioned the hard drive has probably failed. But then other things mentioned it may be an easy fix or may be the CPU.

Also worth mentioning:

- I tried taking the battery out.
- I tried Ctrl+Alt+del while on the blank screen
- I tried connecting to an external monitor, nothing happens.
- The cursor will move.
- I tried loading a Windows 7 repair disc. I made a disc using an HP laptop, I read in a few places -that it doesn't matter the make of the laptop. When I try this method it essentially results the same way as selecting Startup Repair
- I can access the option to boot from Safe Mode. When I do it goes to the Loading Windows Files page and then starts loading files and always freezes on Loaded: \windows\system32\DRIVERS\avgidsha.sys. Not sure if this means anything? It then stays frozen for about 30 seconds and then just restarts.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts or advice about this issue and what I can do to potentially resolve it.

Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays.

If anyone has an idea on how to remedy this, please help! I feel bad because I am out of town at the moment and my parents currently do not have a computer until this gets fixed.

Thanks

Using another laptop to make a restoration disc won't help things as the drivers will be tailored to the laptop that you made the disc from and not your specific laptop. Probably the best thing to do would be to use an actual Windows 7 installation disc, wipe the hard drive to do a clean format, and then reinstall and use your product key to activate. Sounds like some drivers got corrupted.

How will I use a product key though since Windows 7 comes preinstalled on the Laptop? I don't think I have a product key since it came pre-installed? Also, is there any way for me to get data off the HDD? I didn't even have to ask but she assured me she didn't back anything up.\

Thank you for your help g-unit.

Update: I went in and set it to not automatically restart. Because of this I could then actually see the BSOD instead of it just blinking. On the top it said "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME", then all the default text with some stop codes on the bottom. Does this mean the HDD is fried?
