i7-4770k or i5-4670k, 290x or GTX 780ti mainly for BF4

Hi all,

so for my new build I would like to know if I was to drop from the i7 to the i5, will I lose performance when gaming? I wont be doing any video editing, but I will be working with Photoshop but just occasionally.

here is my build, http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2sneG

one concern I have is of course the GPU...until yesterday I was a big Nvidia fan, but reading on the performance power of the 290 and 290x that AMD is offering I am in a bit of a pickle. I know the non-reference cards should be coming out very soon. my main concern is i have read about driver problems and hopefully the non-reference cards will be better cooled and be less noisy ( I hate noisy components) which is why I am considering a GTX 780ti. I wont be doing any SLI or Crossfire any time soon because I will be playing on a single 1080p monitor, but I do want to play on ultra settings with ease.

the one component I am certain on is my Mobo. I would like to save some money, however I am willing to go up to $2000 on my build. I already own all of the other components like keyboard, mouse, and case which i am not including in the $2000 budget.

i will be putting this build together by mid January so hopefully by then some prices will go down, and we can get more info on the non-reference 290x cards. (asus and msi both posting pictures recently of their new cards)

thank you for taking the time to read this and for any potential solutions you may have!

I think i5-4670k+780 Ti will do a fantastic job in BF4. Expect 75 fps on Ultra at 1920x1080. The 290x can do 71 fps or 72 fps, also excellent.

I'm not sure about the 850W PSU. With a single card (GTX 780 Ti or 290x), 750W would be plenty. With two cards, you should look at 1000W PSUs.

I suggest you think hard and decide now if you will ever add a second card. If it's likely, get a larger PSU.

yea im pretty sure i can save the $100 with switching to the i5 which i will be overclocking to about 4 GHz anyways.

but i dont think ill be getting a second GPU, when its time to upgrade ill just buy another single card, which i wont have to do for at least 3 years. however, i will look into the 750W option which could save some cash as well that can go into the better GPU
also, just thinking about the 512 bit memory interface of the 290x (4gb) over the 384 bit that the 780ti (3 gb) is at, does that make a difference to the speed of the card?

I just built a pc with an i5 4670k, if i were you i would go with a single r9 290, it will cost you less and it will still perform above 780 and around 290x and 780ti level, the r9 290 will kill bf4 and once mantle is released it will be even better, and then with that extra money you save from not buying a way OVERKILL graphics card you can upgrade your cooling solution to an h80i or better. because as i said i just built an i5 4670k build and these things are H-O-T and will need aggressive cooling solutions for OC'ing.

I get it obviously you are an Nvidia person, but If his main focus is Battlefield 4 then a 750$ 780ti is way more than he needs for a single monitor 1080p experience, sorry to bring your butthurt into the open world. we are here to help him, not play fan boy, he could use a better cooler and doesnt need a 780ti, he could buy a 400 dollar r9 290 and get similar performance and call it a day, AMD optimization is better in BF4 and mantle will only make it better. And having 4gb of vram is better future proofing for multi monitor and ultra hd situations.

R9 290-400-500$

GTX 780ti-700$+

Now see is it really worth 250$ more to the OP, especially since AMD plays it better anyway.
You will respond with and ignorant response i presume but I've proved you wrong. He definitely does NOT need a 780ti for BF4 or really any other game. And we clearly know what the 780ti is and isn't the fastest on the planet, the 690 and 7990 is still more powerful.

This is why i recommend a better cooler instead of a way unnecessary gpu, bc as i said i just built an i5 4670k and OCing is hotter than hell on it. all haswell chips are hot in fact.

thank you for all of your replies, i am very thankful for all of your opinions!
there are a lot of sites that have benchmarked the GTX 780/780ti and the R9 290/290X and all in all they will all do what i need them to do with not too much of a difference in performance.
so a $700+ price tag on the 780ti is a little too much.
so considering the price of the other 3 i just really want the card that will be most relied upon to not give any driver problems or any other problems that can come up with a graphics card.

is it true that Nvidia cards are better known for there reliability than AMD cards?

considering i have about 2-3 weeks before purchasing the products, i am hoping the non reference R9 cards will come out, because ive read a few reviews and they all stated that the new coolers and overclocking ability with the non reference cards reduces the heat produced by the reference R9's (95 degrees) as well as reduces the noise level that a lot of people were complaining about.

so all in all i just want to have a GPU that i can rely on for the next 2-3 years without a problem.

as for the cooler, the H55 wont be enough to keep the temperatures down after overclocking?

The H55 more than likely will not be enough, research the proccesor, it runs hot and many people are complaing about even h75 and h80i not doing the best job, this also depends on the temps you desire.

as fars as graphics go, AMD is a longshot better for BF4 with better optimization and mantle on the way it will give you a better power to price ratio than any nvidia card can provide, as they are quite pricey at best. both companies are good and reliable.

When you see people complain about AMD its usually people who have dealt with them when they still were ATI, before AMD bought them out, ever since AMD driver support and customer support has been stellar and all my friends run AMD cards, they are much better for the money, i wouldl suggest to you a corsair H80i: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Series-Extreme-Performance-Liquid/dp/B009ZN03AA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388635424&sr=8-1&keywords=h80i

and any aftermarket cooling solution r9 290 that would save you 300 dollars and still perform at more than desirable fps at 1080p ultra, about around 80-120

Now you may wonder how you would get one cuz they are currently short on the r9 290s, i would suggest building the pc and putting the money for gpu to the side till they are in stock, and if you wanna play bf4 the integrated 4600hd will play at 720p low just fine, if you can live with that for a month then there is no reason to spend 700 on a gpu and instead just wait for the gigabyte or sapphire r9 290s to come back in stock, of course this is my opinion.

excellent advice, thank you for your honest opinion.
i wont be OC-ing too much, most likely about 4.1-4.2 GHz, so the Cooler Master 212 EVO and the Corsair H55 might not be enough, i will definitely look into purchasing the stronger h80i.

as long as the non reference coolers can keep the card quiet and at cooler temperatures, i will definitely look into the R9 290. I just really hope i wont encounter any problems with the card, but i do look forward to the upgrade in performance that mantle is supposed to bring to the GPUs.
Interesting that the on-board graphics will be good enough to play on low resolutions. but yeah, i would rather wait an extra few weeks and get the best bang for buck card i can get. do you recommend a Gigabyte, Sapphire, MSI or Asus? Like how much of a difference will the MHz clock speed and MHz memory have on performance?

Asus and gigabyte as well as evga are all really good for graphics. Sapphire also. MSI has good deals but I've heard bad things about there customer support.
