So, I'm currently running Windows 7 and I'm going to upgrade to 8. I have a DVD with Windows 8 Enterprise, so I'm planning to simply update from one OS to the other. But I'm a little confused and I'm afraid of losing my data. I'm saving everything before I proceed, but I still have some questions:

1 - Will my files still be here after the upgrade?

2 - If I upgrade to Windows 8, I want to get 8.1 after that. Is it free?

3 - In general, what else should I do to assure the upgrade will be secure and problem-free?

Thank you people for your attention.

Solution
Providing you select the upgrade option you will have everything that the upgrade advisor states. Some applications will transfer perfectly and others will not, the upgrade assistant will give a detailed breakdown on all of this.

All of your user data such as pictures, videos, music and documents will transfer without fault.

You can indeed upgrade to 8.1 at any time for free.

Thanks. Oh, and another question: Is it really necessary that I download the latest Windows 7 updates before I upgrade to 8, like some articles say? If I try to upgrade without the updates, am I going to face any problems?

I have never run into that issue, but if you want peace of mind then it cannot hurt.
Let us know how you get on :)

So, I did it. Kept my files, although they were saved on windows.old, and now I'm reinstalling my programs. Had some problems earlier while trying to validate windows, but now everything is ok.

Oh, and Windows 8 is... pretty nice. I'm still creating an opinion about it. Anyway, thanks. If you have any additional hints about my new OS, please let me know =)

Sure, no problem at all.
If you miss the start button, download the StartIsBack utility. It only costs a couple of dollars and give you the full functionality of the previous editions plus more. http://www.startisback.com/
