I'm thinking of getting a simple gpu for a basic computer and have some questions about compatibility. My budget is <$35.

My stuff:
HP P965 mobo
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.67MHz (recently upgraded)
2.5 GB DDR2 RAM
Diablotek 350W PSU
Samsung DVD/CD ROM drive rated at around 28W
PCI-E 1.1 x16 slot

A review of my CPU suggests that it's not very gamer-friendly and that it's best used with NVidia GPUs, but I'm looking at something like the EVGA GeForce 8400 GS DDR3. It says it recommends at least a 350W PSU. Also, I've read here that this card is backwards compatible with PCI-E 1.1 slots, but the replier didn't know if there was any setting adjustments to be made to make it so.

My questions:
Would I be pushing PSU too hard if I got this card?

Does anyone yet know if I'd have to manually adjust some settings to make this card work with my equipment?

Does anyone have a recommendation as to what card I should get for my system?

Thanks :)

In spite of the Diablotek 350W PSU being a not-so-good PSU, you should be able to use just about any card that doesn't need an aux 6 pin connector feeding it. I.E. one that gets all its power from the slot itself.

But the $35 budget will really cramp your style. Here's some cards between $25 and $50.

Get the most you can afford. And you can use both Nvidia and AMD will equal success. Btw, the 2.67 MHZ C2Dis still a good dual core gaming CPU with a HD 7750 if you want to spend that much. I know, because I had one.
In case you're interested in going that route: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709&IsNodeId=1&Description=hd%207750&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20
