I got a computer from a friend that has been having a keyboard and mouse issue with their sony vaio laptop. External devices do not work (however the keyboards function keys work, along with the sony vaios assist/web/vaio buttons). The touchpad is set to on vai the function key + F1. There are a lot of solutions that I've found but they all seem to be missing the fact that you cannot get to the settings for anything since neither the keyboard or mouse work both on-board and external. I'm assuming my friends computer had an update for windows 8, and caused driver incompatibility. That seems to be the case with almost all of the problems related to this with windows 8.

All I want to accomplish is restoring the computer though. I believe restoring it back to factory will resolve the driver issue and then deny updates automatically until this issue is resolved. Is there a way to get to the restore partition before the computer boots? I've also read that the UEFI took over the standard bios accessibility. But I'm not sure if there is a way around that on a sony vaio. I should be able to use the keyboard and mouse inside the trouble shooter.

Any ideas on what I can do?

Wanted to note that I solved this issue then. The problem was as suspected, driver issues. With Sony Vaios they have an assist button. You power down the computer then hit the Assist button which will start up Sony's rescue software, and allows you to enter the bios and other recovery features before running into windows. I did a "refresh" so not to lose any files for my client and the computer works great. I did noticed one of the apps deleted happened to be avast and I have heard that after installing avast for one user that the problem was created. So my two theories were either A. Bad windows update or B. avast didn't like his computer. The computers onboard keyboard and touchpad as well as externals work perfect now.

How do you get into safe mode from the initial boot and before windows starts up on windows 8? I've heard safe mode doesn't work to fix the issue either but would be worth the shot

EDIT: Just looked it up. Everything to get to safe mode requires me to be able to use a mouse or a keyboard. I can't click the initial restart button while holding shift and i can't get into windows to go to the PC settings.

On another note, I used this same method on another Sony Vaio to install windows 7 on a completely blank Hard Drive. It was a little frustrating that I couldn't find a way to boot from CD without an OS but the Sony Assist button works like a charm there too. You can choose two options, one you can go to the Bios and select the boot order (and change the CD drive to 1st priority (also changed the bios settings from UEFI to Legecy, don't know if that really mattered though), or you can click Boot from Media in the Assist options which will do a one time boot to your CD driver, usb's, etc. Just make sure your manufacture has windows 7 drivers for it's components, looking around and it seems like some manufactures don't give you the option driver wise to switch back to windows 7.

Hope this helps someone down the road. :)
