Should I upgrade to Windows 8.1?

Hello, Tom'sHardware-ians!

I use a Sony Vaio Fit F15A13SNB, and I just want to know, considering that the final version is out, if it's wise to upgrade to Windows 8.1, or if it's just plain stupid, or somewhere in between.

There are many advantages, I know. First off, it's free for Win8.0 users like me. Then there are the dozens of apps that don't work with 8.0 but do with 8.1. The comeback of the Start button. Better multitasking. Better MetroUI. Better resource handling. And for me, personally, on this laptop, a fix for an odd little quirk that made the "Do Nothing When Lid Is Closed" power option unavailable (I know this was by design for Vaio Fit laptops, but I have a workaround). All in all, it seems like a no-brainer decision to move on up to 8.1. I only waited this long because Avast 8 wasn't compatible with it; but now I find Avast 9 is.

On the flipside, however, I've been hearing SO many horror stories of 8.1 Upgrades Gone Wrong. The compatibility issues (Do check out my specs here). The really worrying rumor that 8.1 disables the recovery drive. Are these things worth holding off on the upgrade?
Is it actually true that 8.1 somehow disables my recovery drive anyway? And while on that topic, is a recovery drive and a recovery partition the same thing? As far as I'm aware, the former is something that Sony gave me, and the latter is something that Win8 gave me.
If 8.1 really can do something like that, I can't even roll back to 8.0 if I decide I don't want it anymore. (Is there any way to create a failsafe 8.0 downgrade? A backup plan for if 8.1 craps out?)

How do you guys think I should proceed from here? Upgrade blindly? Create a safety net first, the upgrade? Not upgrade at all, and wait for a few months?
Are there any other things that I should be thinking about apart from the questions I already asked?

- Nick

Hi t4akawolf...I installed Win 8.1 straight away on my new Pc Gaming Rig (I ditched consoles gaming for this generation!!!) and I really like it.

As everyone else I was skeptic (aren't we all when talking about changes?) about the new interface... eventually I like it even more than all other OS I have been using (including DOS lol). During Christmas I upgraded my niece's laptop from 8 to 8.1 and I couldn't find any fault in doing that, you need to make sure that you have ALL updates available for Win 8 and then go on the store where you will find the upgrade (approximately 4GB) ready to downloaded, you do not lose any data and you really do not need to click anywhere, PC nowadays are simple (far too simple).

So far I couldn't find any compatibility problem whatsoever and with my rig the system works flawlessly, having used for a few hours windows 8 I would suggest to upgrade to 8.1 as the experience is far better.
