It will work, however AMD driver support in Linux is quite a bit behind NVidia, so you should go with a similar level NVidia card such as the 650ti 2GB version. Then you should install the propriety drivers from the software sources menu for best performance. If you only plan to be doing 2d things (such as desktop compositing) or are an open source diehard you could use the FOSS drivers which are about equally developed on both platforms.

Hi Jason,
Thank you very much for your response: my wife bought me this graphics card for christmas. I had linux mint 15 previously installed, but the integrated graphics on the MOBO was failing, so she went to bestbuy and they sold her this one. Before I returned it, I just wanted to check it out on the system. I am new to linux, so still finding my way around.

I upgraded the PSU and put in the card. However, it automatically boots into software rendering mode (message pops up saying possible issue with drivers) and if I try to do anything strenuous, it hangs at once.

I don't want to do anything fancy with the card: just standard libre-office, latex, etc etc. Before I return the damn thing and get the 650Ti, any suggestions ? Thanks a lot in advance !
