Hey guys,
I've never actually gamed on Windows 8 cause when I finally got my hands on it I just went straight to 8.1 (which I regret). Alot of games I have been playing recently have been acting up but only the DirectX games (Minecraft works fine) but either the game launches with a black screen or I can go into the game and all the menus but it freezes anytime under 10 minutes of playing the game (depending on the game). Everygame was all happy and dandy when I put it into compatibility mode its just been the last week that all of these games have been acting up even with the compatibility diagnostics tool.

So could anyone recommend any fixes cause it would be a real shame to have to have the hassle of reformating my harddrive (which on a low performance drive thats 2tb took about 5 hours) then reinstall windows then all the programs would just be a nightmare all over again...

Thanks in advance

EDIT:
Silly me, specs didn't post as my signiture.
I've got an AMD 6300 OC @ 4ghz on an Asrock 990fx Extreme3 Motherboard
Got an Asus GTX 760 DirectCU II OC @ something stable within its stress tests
And 2x4gb sticks in Dual Channel 1866mhz ram
And finally my El cheapo 2tb Seagate Barracuda which is so slow... (no SSD D:)

Oh Tomb Raider (sometimes can get past black screen but then crashes at a certain point of the game while the game can still let Lara finish her sentence), Grand Theft Auto 4 (when it actually launches it freezes mid-game while repeating the last second of audio and while it sometimes recovers it sometime crashes and may freeze the computer forcing a restart), Garry's mod (doesn't launch, might crash midgame if I ever can get past the black screen o death), Skyrim (will freeze sometimes might recover or crash in game), Half life 2 (gets 1 second of the valve intro thingy only the audio though), Counter Strike Source (same symptoms as Half Life 2), Portal 2 (starts repeating last half second of audio while freezing the screen then crashing).

Games that do work: Minecraft, any 2d games

I'm pretty sure its a DirectX problem (maybe 11.2 because of Windows 8.1) and the fact any 2d games work and Minecraft works (because it is OpenGL based, no DirectX) and almost every DirectX game has the same symptoms, don't launch at all or freeze while audio either keeps playing a little short chunk or keeps repeating while sometimes recovering or just crashing.

Oh and also there aren't any Nvidia Graphics card updates and all my drivers are 8.1 drivers and also Windows update only has 1 update (which is Windows Defender, not related but will install it anyway)

Okay found what was wrong, the process RTSS was screwing up my system and since this is required to use Msi Afterburner or Evga Precision X now I can't use my favorite overclocking utilities... :/
