Do you have to match the wireless card to be compatible with your router for instance, a netgate router = netgate adapter? Or does it matter?

It shouldn't matter. I have a tp-link wdn-4800 in one tower and an asus ac68u in another tower paired up with a netgear r7000 router and have had no issues with it.

Would it be the same as Asus - IEEE 802.11n USB - Wi-Fi Adapter because its kind of more like a usb connection thing. my router is a wireless n150 wnr1000.
