First time builder, setting up a rig, and I can not get it to boot.

Trying to run a linux on a USB stick but it seems the USB ports arent getting power.

The sticks have LEDs that light up when they run. These blip when they go in, thats it. PS/2 KB flashes the capslock lights on boot, but nothing else.

Main board and cpu plugs are in tight. PSU is brand new. cpu fan spins, and so does GPU. 1x4gb Kingston Hyper-X ram in DIMM1. tried it with and without GPU

but without the USB or PS/2 nothing happens

Solution
I went looking for a casefan at bestbuy and radio shack in the snowstorm last week. found neither. gave up ordered a new CPU from new egg.. starts up first time. Mining rig now pushing 1400khs.

thanks for the help

answer: cpu dead.

Does not post. Nothing happens.

its not in a case, so no lights or speakers, but headphones plugged in give no beeps. CPU fan powers, GPU fan powers.

this board has no cmos jumper. found the pins. JBAT1 but they are not jumped. don't have a piece for it.

i used the vga port with a dviA to vga cable. also tried hdmi to my tv.
vga monitor wouldnt wake up, tv "knew" it was a pc but wouldnt get any signal
dont have a case speaker

I've checked the manual and with your board the jumper has to be in place only when clearing the CMOS, so it's OK.
The graphics card has 2 DVI ports. I guess that you're using the DVI-I one.
Is the 6 pin PCIe cable connected to the graphics card?
Can you borrow a monitor with a DVI port and test?

I was using the DVI port labeled as VGA
PCI is connected to GPU and GPU fan spins.
I don't have access to a DVI monitor.

what about the power on the back panel? KB, and USB sticks wont "light up"

everything is new. When you say you guess there is 5v you mean power to the ports? It doesn't stay powered. Just a blink.

Would the CMOS short fix this? I'm fed up with this mobo and ready to ship it back to amazon. Should I set it up again, and try again?

Yes, the blink proves that there is power to the ports.
Not sure about the CMOS, but you can try it. Remove the CMOS battery for a minute (power cord unplugged) instead of shorting the CMOS pins.
My guess is that it's a monitor/video cable issue, but not sure. An option would be testing the components at a local shop, if possible and not too expensive.

hey ALexoiu

So the new ASUS m5a97 arrived today.
processor and fan mounted
one stick ram in dimma2
one GPU in pci1
power supply to mobo, cpu and gpu.

Power it on and fans spin, mobo has a LED that goes on. but again the USB and KB don't respond, not even a blip of a light on boot like the old one

So maybe its the PSU? It is firmly seated on the mobo. Nice click, like i said, light on, cpu and gpu fans spin.

don't have a case speaker. Mac guy, this is my first build and its a milkcrate miner rig.

Tried using a DVI to VGA cable, off the left side DVI port, thats marked for VGA, both to a monitor and tv but neither wake from sleep
Also tried using HDMI to the TV, says no signal

Guess I can get a case speaker cheap? Don't really want to trek to Radio Shack but probably have to.
