I use MalwareBytes for ALL my office PCs. It works quite well to keep them clean, but I'm wondering if there are additional steps or permissions I can employ to keep staff from haphazardly overriding warnings. (Besides firing the staff for being careless)

best bet is a layered defense...

Do you have a "perimeter" defense? I like to layer OpenDNS (with an account) with a real Firewall/Router (I use Juniper SRX100) with an AV/Support subscription.

What AV do you use? I prefer Avast (now). Just the AV, not the whole suite. Especially in a business setup, the Suite gets in the way.

Have you joined SpiceWorks? They have great management tools for members...

Oh and there is no defense against stupidity.

:-) Good luck.

Nothing can stop stupid. One of the largest vectors for malware is opening file attachments in e-mail, and there's not an easy way to stop that unless you can arrange to have all file attachments stripped from e-mail messages (I believe you can do that with Microsoft Exchange Server, but I've never heard of it being done with browser-based e-mail).

... @mbreslin... trhe SRX100's AVsuite checks ALL inbound and outbound traffic. Yes there is an impact on the throughput...

OpenDNS is good. I use it mainly for filtering Internet access to my home. By establishing a free account I can prevent most advertising and porn sites, two significant sources of infection. You can also block social media sites, such as Facebook, and shopping sites, if you want to, that would be appropriate for a business and stop people from goofing off on the Internet during business hours while also preventing some malware attacks.

yes... OpenDNS is awesome:

with the account you can take away almost anything internet based... AND you can monitor what sites are being accessed from your public address.... Good for "Big Brothert" on the users.

corroded, is the SRX100 an Internet security appliance, like SonicWall? If so, they are significantly more expensive than a simple anti-virus suite, although by far the best solution, especially if you have a significant number of workstations to secure.

Full blow (entry level) Firewall / Router. Full Juniper OS and security suites. Awesome tool, great support too (it is what you pay an annual subscription for. Supports VPN's multiple WAN ports, assingable LAN ports, everything. Sub $1000 + annual subscription.

I assumed the original poster was looking for an inexpensive solution, but if not, a security appliance is definitely the best way to go. And if you have 15 workstations to secure, 15 times $30 for traditional antivirus closes the cost difference quite a bit, plus a security appliance offers so much more and better protection. I've only worked with SonicWall, but it was fantastic. And completely brain-dead-easy VPNs, too!
