I have one monitor connected to my AVG cable in the back of my PC. I bought a second monitor and a monitor splitter. I plugged the splitter into the Avg cable and followed the directions microsoft gave in order to install a second monitor. Yet both monitors just mirror each other, they have the same image on them. I tried looking up answers to my problem but it seemed that my monitor was not recognized. Can someone help? Much appreciated.

I'm currently on a mac so I can't really guide you to it, but I'll try.

Go to control panel, then click on adjust screen resolution.
There should be options there to switch from double desktop to same desktop.

Sorry for the poor help. :(

So in order to use two monitors, I need to plug the second monitor into a different port on the computer? Is there another way?

To use extended display, which is what you want...yes. Two different cables.
With the VGA splitter, the PC sees only one.

It was not prebuilt. We got it form a friend and it was boxed up.

CPU-Z can almost certainly report the make/model num of the specific parts.

So what do you want me to do?

You're the only one who can eyeball the PC, and determine what capabilities it has. Running the CPU-Z application would probably tell you exactly what is in it.
Once the rest of us out know, we can recommend a course of action if you want two displays.

Or tell you that is isn't possible with that current equipment.

But so far...we can't tell.
