[EDIT: budget is actually $900, not $1000 sorry]

Hey

So this will be my first build ever. I'm pretty excited. I'm also pretty happy with the components listed at the bottom but, being a complete noob, I have no idea if they'll work together, or work for what I'm trying to do. Advice most welcome.

Approximate Purchase Date: Within the next two weeks

Budget Range: $1000 with shipping/tax (no monitor)

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Video editing, audio editing, maybe Portal.

Example software: Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Blender, Lightworks

Are you buying a monitor: No, I've already got this monitor.

Do you need to buy OS: Yes, Windows 8.1 system builder looks fine

Preferred Websites for Parts: I'm an Amazon Prime member, so that's always cool. Newegg works too.

Location: SeaTac, Washington state, USoA

Parts Preferences: Intel Core i7, a quiet case would be good for audio editing

Overclocking: Probably not

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080 (with planned second monitor, when I have monies)

Additional comments/questions:
- Do I need to do anything special to use a second monitor?
- I'm also planning to add another 8GB stick of RAM later on
- Recommendation for basic graphics card for video editing? (VE software rarely makes use of it, but maybe for Portal and occasional 3D modelling)

Why Are You Upgrading: Video editing on a 15" laptop sucks, need something awesome.

Current part list:

SSD: SanDisk Ultra Plus 128 GB SATA 6.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SDSSDHP-128G-FFP

PSU: Antec VP-450 450 Watt Energy Star Certified Power Supply

MOBO: Gigabyte DDR3 1600 LGA 1150 B85 HDMI mATX Motherboard with UEFI BIOS ATX GA-B85-HD3

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K Quad-Core Desktop Processor 3.5 GHZ 8 MB Cache BX80646I74770K

Optical drive: Asus 24x DVD-RW Serial-ATA Internal OEM Optical Drive DRW-24B1ST

Case: Antec P280 Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (1x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory (CMZ8GX3M1A1600C10)

Wifi card: Suggestions?

Solution
Thanks a ton guys. Good info.

I kind of need to change the parameters of my original post. Looking over my budget again, <$900 would be a much better.

Here's what I've got so far:

It is reccomended that you get a graphics card.

If you're willing to use NCIX as well (they have free shipping on orders over $100), you should go for this:

-Locked i7-4770 since you're not overclocking, but the 4-cores with hyper-threading will be useful for video editing.
-16gb of RAM. Team may not be as popular as G.Skill or Corsair, but they are just as good and they have life-time warranty.
-Do you really need a wireless adapter? If you are able to hook up your computer via ethernet cable, ditch the wireless adapter. If you can't, this Rosewill one is decent. It's connected via USB, but you can move the antenna closer to the router. It'll be better than a PCIe adapter because the signal won't be blocked.
-The Define R4 is the most silent case on the market.
-The XFX 550w is a great quality psu, and it's actually $50 after rebate at NCIX, not $60.

If you want to cut down on money, you can grab this gpu instead: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/sapphire-video-card-100358l
That should bring down the price to around ~$1000 after tax.

Me and RealChaos are evenly matched
-my build
-overclockable i7 4770k
-air flowing case
-stronger graphics being the "x" version
-1866mhz memory
-cooling CPU for when rendering videos
They are pretty much the same just a couple different things

Not really.
You have an unlocked processor that can overclock, but the motherboard won't support overclocking. So it's just a waste of money buying the unlocked version.
The Define R4 has much better airflow than the Rosewill Redbone, partly due to the better cable management so the cables won't block the air. Also, as the OP stated that he wanted a quiet case, the Define R4 is made for that.
You might have 1866 mhz RAM, but that won't make a difference compared to 1600mhz. The performance difference is very small, it's negligible. However, the performance difference between 8gb and 16gb of ram is huge in video editing.
The R9-270 and R9-270X performs very similar. Both are overkill for the OP's needs, which is why I also recommended a 7770 to reduce the price.

- No GPU, since I need to do more reading on how that integrates with Adobe software. Sounds like an Nvidia with =>96 cuda cores and 1GB is the most bang/buck.
- Added a cheap boot drive, video software is a pig, and migrating windows to an SSD later sounds painful. Might as well do it now. Maybe I can steal a scratch drive or export drive from another machine.
- No idea what sound card I might get--saving that for later.
- I skimped on the PSU. I have no plans for overclocking, and I don't need a massive GPU either. Will I regret it?

Solution
It looks good. The Antec 450w is a nice budget psu, and so long as you don't put in a high end gpu you'll be fine. You can stick in something like the 7770 or GTX 650 ti in there in the future and it will still be good.

Only thing is that I'm not a fan of the wireless adapter. I prefer wireless adapters with antennas because you'll get a stronger signal that way. The one I posted above is a great one for the price.

Okay, here's my "RTM" selection. Snagged a couple of sweet deals (gonna go with 8gb for now, buy some more later) and there's an antennae on my wifi reciever. I'm going to mark this thread as solved, but if you guys have any further advice, by all means.

Filmmaking is my currently unprofitable hobby, though hopefully I'll start making money soon.

Format: 1080p MOV files from a Canon t2i, converted through Eyeframe into Lightworks' native format.
Addendum: I will be soon be using Adobe Premiere in tandem with Lightworks.
Length: Currently 2-3 minutes with occasional 10-15 minute pieces, but I will probably have a feature-length project before long.]]

I hope this system will be sufficient, but I do plan to expand the storage, memory, RAM, and graphics as needed.

you're going to need... lots more storage. The raw footage for my thesis film was 300 GB of DVCProHD MXF files. (mind you, shot at around a 5:1 ratio with lots of stuff that is passes for greenscreen VFX)
