thats a pretty old CPU.. Socket 775? phew that's old. I doubt any modern cards would perform great with something that old. Maybe the GTX 400 series or the AMD 4000-5000 series? I honestly don't know pretty old CPU
An Asus 7770 would be a good choice. It's not a great card, but it would be a waste of money to get anything more powerful. It will also allow you to upgrade your CPU in the future without needing a new GPU too.

Wow a 7770? hmm he's got a CPU Authority badge probably should listen to him
Well, you've got a PCI x16 slot... Maybe a GTX 660 or 760. I wouldn't get something more powerful because the CPU will hold it back. And you should add RAM, try to get 6 or 8 GB.
I had an E5200 or E5300 and ran it with a 7750, both of which equally needed an upgrade, though on CPU intensive games the CPU was bottlenecking pretty bad. Getting more than a 7770 wouldn't be wise unless you're planning on upgrading your MOBO, RAM, and CPU soon.

and if he IS planning on upgrading the rest later (taking a % performance loss on the GPU now b/c of CPU bottleneck) but will run w the new parts, just get a 7870.
no, I said that, if only if, he is planning on upgrading the CPU/MOBO at some point too. Like if he ever gets a FX 6300 and a AM3+ board, the 7790 will quickly become his weakest link. So the 7870 is something to consider for future proofing.
