Hey all,

Looking at MoBos for my build. I'm undecided between the 970 and 990 chipsets. Using the 970 chipset saves me 20 pounds to spend on my GPU instead, but I've heard that the 970 chipset doesn't have the transfer rate to take advantage of an 8 core CPU.

For your money, would you go with the cheaper 970 chipset or would you fork out for a higher quality 990 board? And if so, why?

970 99fx 990fx chipset all mostly comes down to PCI-express lanes

970 - 16x and 4x, or 4x/4x in crossfire
99fx - 16x and 8x, or 8x/8x in crossfire
990fx 16x and 16x, or 16x/8x or 16x/16x in crossfire.

I'm probably off on those numbers, so no flames, but that's the main difference. 970 isn't enough bandwidth to crossfire two cards.

The main difference, and although not related to chipset directly, it is indirectly, which is the VRM or voltage controllers for power for the chip. The 970 boards usually have less and cheaper VRM's, 99fx better, 990fx the best and most.

I have the Asus 99fx Evo board and love it and swapped over the Asus M97 board as the 97 couldn't overclock over 4.1 without getting too hot or crashing. The 99fx with the better and more VRM's can hit 4.6 for me and my chip.
