Moving old hard drive to new computer as a backup?

I've got a SATA hard drive from my old Windows XP computer with files already in it. Thing is, the computer suddenly died so everything from the old computer is still on there. I want to use it as a backup for my new Windows 7 computer, but I'm not exactly sure how.

Surely it's not as easy as just putting it in the case and letting Windows do everything else, right?

Depends on what you mean by "use it as a backup." To boot from, just to get your old files from, or as a backup drive? Can you make it a little clearer, please?

If you want to do backups on it, a) you will lose all your old data, and b) it should be in an internal enclosure.
