I only have one HDD and it's in my current computer so to move it to my new one I'm going to reformat it. I want to make 100% sure that the computer I'm building is working before I reformat my hard drive because once I do there is no going back.
Can I run my PC without the hard drive and if so what do I check for to make sure it's all working before I make the leap of faith?

Solution
You can start it up, connected to the monitor. You will receive an error message like "no HDD Detected or no boot disk installed". You will be able to open the bios to check or adjust the system. You can also boot the system using a linux os on a flash drive (http://www.techhive.com/article/249870/create_a_bootable_linux_flash_drive_in_three_easy_steps.html). I do not know what you built but (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-recommendation-benchmark,3269-2.html) you could pick up one of these to install the OS on. It will give a real time system boost in performance.

You can use a linux live disc, something like ubuntu will allow you to run an operating system off a dvd and ensure that your system is working properly before you install windows.
