I put in a new 500 gig drive into a winxp system.

typed compmgmt.msc into run.

right clicking on the new drive gives these options only:
New Volume, Properties, and Help (no convert to basic)
All volumes were empty at first and I selected new partition and then formatted before I realized that it was automatically dynamic and no option for basic was available.

The disk is automatically listed
Disk2 and under that it says
Dynamic then below it is
465.76 then below that it is
Online

Why is it Dynamic and not basic and how do I get it to be basic?

edit: does it even matter? will the drive be perfectly ok as dynamic and not basic? will there be greater or lesser risk of disk errors or problems?

I just lost a drive I really don't want to make a mistake in the installation of a new drive. Right now It is blank, Dynamic, but formatted and empty....easy to change if it would be better to convert to a basic drive, but how do I do this if it would be better to convert it?

Thank you so much! I would click on pick as the solution but it doesn't work anymore (clicking on it does nothing but jump the page back up to the top).

I tried the 3rd method before, but I was right clicking on the unallocated space pane (on the right) and not the drive pane (on the left). I am glad I could get this thing converted BEFORE I had data on it.

Thanks again.
