Why can my board only handle 8 gigabytes of RAM?

I have been told my Asus M2A-VM can only handle 8 gigabytes of RAM. Why is this the case?

yes you have been told right http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2AVM/#specifications this board can max support 8gb of ram ddr2. This is the case because it is manufactured like that every board and device has a limit set by manufacturer.

It's a chipset limitation. Back in 2007, few buyers would even consider getting 8GB of memory.
