Connecting VGA on mobo to monitor using DVI cable

Hi,

My graphics card may be on the way out so in the meantime I need to prepare for a contingency plan. The mobo has a VGA port and the monitor has HDMI/DVI/VGA ports.

The issue is that the cable is DVI which is about 10 metres long and is hidden behind the skirting, the output from the graphics card is DVI where the cable joins a HDMI cable that is plugged into the HDMI port.

Can I use an adaptor that is VGA male & DVI female for the mobo end whilst still using the DVI cable? I don't think I can still use the HDMI port of the monitor end but what about the DVI port?

I know the best option is to simply use a VGA cable but it would mean having it sprawled out across the room!

Thanks and hope you can help.

Yes, you should be able to use an adapter with no issues.
Just find the adapter in a shop, since I assume you don`t already have it.
Just be careful that the DVI cable that you have is Dual-link DVI, and you buy a Single-link adaptor. Make sure the adaptor has the same pin setup as the cable.

Thanks for your helpful reply.

Just to clarify, because my monitor supports VGA & DVI, would that mean the DVI port of the monitor will only support DVI-D and therefore I have to connect the cable to the VGA port on the monitor instead?
