Hi,

there is a phone socket (RJ11) on the wall connected to a network. Is there anyway I can connect a PC to it via an RJ45-rj11 cable/adapter?

From what I understand, only the middle 4 pins on an rj45 are for data transfer, so if the above method doesn't work, Could I re-map the 4 pins in the port to work etc? I don't mind how tedious it is, as being able to use this port will save a fair bit of money, as our only other way of getting internet to the location would likely be using a 3g dongle, racking up monthly charges etc.

Thanks in advance for any help!

How do you know the RJ11 jack is connected to a network? Do you even know what the "network" is? I don't see anyone connecting a phone jack to an ethernet network. Why was this jack even put there? If you have that jack already connected to a network, just take it out and run an ethernet cable alongside the same run to the other side to connect to the router/modem/switch on the other side of the jack.

First make sure that there are 4 pairs of wires in the cable, next figure out where the other end of the cable goes. If the other end of the cable is tied into more phone lines you will have to separate that cable from the rest. Then I would put RJ45 connectors on each end.

Sorry, I was mis-informed, the cable actually goes to a place where it can be converted as you have said to an RJ45 and connected to the network. Running a new wire along side as said above is really out of the question considering where it is.

Only problem, there is only 4 wires compared to the 8 in an RJ45 usually. What I was trying to find out is whether or not that would be enough, as I have read at various places now that for a computer connection, only 4 of the pins in an RJ45 are utilized anyway and that the otheres are reserved for other jobs. Is that information correct? if it is, then could I just put those 4 into the 4 pins the RJ45 uses at each end of the cable?

Thanks!

It depends on the type of wire. If it is the older style copper phone wire where you have red, yellow, green, black then it is unlikely it will work. You still need data grade cable. You would prefer cat5 but cat3 might work. You can use 2 pair and it will run at either 10m or 100m. Pretty much it follows standard cabling on a rj45 with pins 1,2 being the first pair and 3,6 being the other.

Now all this gets you is a cable you still need equipment to plug into it on both ends.
