Hi,

I have a request for help from what seems like a helpful and highly knowledgeable community.

I have a Sony Vaio SVE1412 model (64 Bit, Windows 8) purchased from United States about an year ago. The problem I currently have is that the screen started going blank after entering the password. I believe one of the following two things might have caused the problem: 1. Yesterday it downloaded some critical and optional updates from Microsoft as I did not log on for the past 2 months or so. 2. I was also trying to play with administrator/ user accounts with the view of simplifying them. Not sure if I mistakenly did something while I was there.

I tried using Assist button and go into Bios/ Recovery but it does not seem to repair it. The problem is coming back after exiting the Bios screen.

Just to test it, I entered a wrong password but it is immediately detecting it. Once I enter the right password, it seems to validate it for few seconds after which it is going blank. I do not have any recovery CD as it came pre-installed. I also do not have the product key as I lost the email which might have it. The serial number and service tag are the only ones given on the laptop itself as stickers.

Any help is appreciated. I tried hard resetting as well (removing the battery/ power connection etc.)

Best, Srupa

edit:
how mismach graphics files happen:
microsoft's windows error reporting detects lots of machines with a graphics problem, reports this to a vendor, vendor gives microsoft a fix, microsoft puts fix in windows update. some people don't shutdown or reboot the machine, the fix is placed into a driver update queue to be applied on the next reboot. Now if the owner of the machine either goes to a vendor and uses the vendors installer the vendor's installer detects the files you have but does not look in the driver update queue for their driver. they just install their drivers and call it done. Now weeks later you reboot...

Thanks Yashmatogi for your quick response. I shall go through the link you mentioned to see if I can get any solution. The last option you mentioned might not work as I do not have the product key to reinstall Windows though I do not mind doing so. Luckily I took backup of data yesterday as a fluke.

I would look for mismached graphics driver files. basically, caused by not rebooting the laptop after a graphics driver update.
(common when people don't realize that sleep and reboot are not the same thing). Anyway fixing it requires booting into safe mode, delete the graphics files or uninstall the graphics driver and rebooting. I would then update the graphics driver from the vendor, reboot and see if the problem goes away.

Hello,

Many thanks for your kind response. I forgot to mention that this problem happened yesterday after I rebooted the machine once the download of files got completed.

Coming to the solution proposed by you, will you please suggest how to boot it in safe mode as it does not seem to provide me with such an option? As I mentioned before, I tried going into Assist screen options and using 'repair/ recovery' but it again is getting struck at the same screen after exiting.

Thanks again.

Now weeks later you reboot, power goes out or you do a shutdown, now windows sees that it can now apply the driver update and it does it. you now have incorrectly matched driver files (drivers from two different builds of the driver) and windows thinks the driver is ok but you don't get video.

Hi,

Many thanks for sharing the URL. Though I tried several times since yesterday to use Shift F8 key as I read it in the earlier posts, it did not work. However when I went through the URL sent by you, there was a tip in the comments section by one of the users who suggested to use click power button and then restart to circumvent the Shift F8 problem. It basically worked for me and it took me to the advanced start options. Initially I tried to repair it but it threw back an error saying that there were two problems that Windows could not correct and suggested me to explore other repair options. Then I chose to restore it to a point older than yesterday (there were two system restores available- one was dated yesterday before I downloaded the files and another one dating back to first week of November) as I wanted to make sure that I do not land up into the same problem should I choose the restore point as yesterday's. The restore took quite a bit of time (more than 1.5 hour or so) but it essentially brought back the system for me in shape. I will worry about downloading updates later on as I need to patiently do it one by one to eliminate the root cause.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. Wish you all a happy and successful new year.
