Hi All!

This is my first post with Tom's hardware. I usually can get away with reading past issues and figuring it out, this time around it's proving difficult!

Anyway, I have a new Z87 Sabertooth Motherboard with a haswell processor. I built the machine about a month ago and haven't had this issue until several days ago.

THE PROBLEM
Whenever I leave my computer idle (usually downloading something) I'll lose connection to the internet. Other devices over the same WIFI are not disconnected which shows that the issue is related to the onboard LAN card.

THE WORKAROUND
If I open up command prompt and renew my ipconfig, this will solve the problem, although only for a short while.

ATTEMPTS TO FIX
1. Windows diagnostic pass through
2. Older driver (7/11/2013) was uninstalled, machine rebooted, registry was cleaned. Most recent driver was reinstalled to no avail.
3. Clean reinstall of Windows

Not having too much luck fixing it. I might just bite the bullet and buy a LAN card to slot in, although after spending $250 on a motherboard, one likes to see said motherboard working properly :).

Thanks for any assistance you can provide!

Regards,
Brandon

I presume the Z87 Sabertooth is connected via Ethernet, but are other devices connected through WIFI or Ethernet? Since you run ipconfig /renew, what DHCP server are you using? Have you tried using a static IP address and if so, does it help? Is the LAN adapter allowed to go into sleep mode if there's no network activity (Energy Star or other power saving features enabled or disabled)?

Hi Ghislain,

Thanks for the quick response! I think you nailed it with the sleep settings. I didn't realize that this onboard NIC has a pretty robust energy management system in place. I modified the adapter power management settings.

Here are my options and what's checked.

1. Respond to ARP requests without waking system (YES)
2. Respond to NS requests without waking system (YES)
3. Energy Efficient Ethernet (NO --> was YES before)
4. Reduce link speed during standby (NO --> was YES before)
5. Reduce link speed during system idle (NO --> was YES before)

WAKE ON LAN
1. Wake on Magic Packet (YES)
2. Wake on Pattern Match (YES)
3. Wake on Magic Packet from power off state (YES)
4. Wake on Link Settings (NO)

Thanks so much for your help!! If you see anything awry, let me know.

Regards,
Brandon

According to the IPCONFIG /ALL...

Lease Obtained : Tuesday, December 31, 2013 9:12:27 AM
Lease Expires: Tuesday, December 31, 2013 12:12:27 PM.

Since it's not several days, is there a way to configure it to expire several days later? Or is this setting configured appropriately?

According to IPCONFIG /ALL...

my DHCP server is 8.24.176.1. Is that what you were looking for? Also, would this be a router issue then? If so, then why do my WIFI devices not lose connection when the lease expired?

Thanks,
Brandon

Hi Ghislain. Happy new year!

Would I do that through my router? I'm pretty sure that's what the problem is. I was also having issue with my computer time, it would go back and forth +/- 6 hours and I think it was hitting the lease expiry.

Thanks for all your help.
