Hi All,

I really got struck in deciding the GPU for my FirstBuild

My Requirement is :

I will be playing on 25 inch monitor at Full resolution or on 50inch LED TV and I normally put whatever is the max setting available for a game.
Also I am not that hard core gamer. But still like smoothness in the game play.
I am unable to decide weather to go for a
a.MSI NVIDIA GTX 760 2GB Superclocked HAWX or -- 225$
b.EVGA 04G-P4-2768-KR GeForce GTX 760 4GB 256-bit -- 275$ (rough prices)

I am not that willing to spend 300$ for a GTX 770 2GB. Because I could get the 760 4GB EVGA with double VRAM (even though we may not utilize the full 4gb VRAM ,there is nothing wrong in having it as future proof right ? ).
So if I buy EVGA 760 4GB will it be future proof as well.
Later after 3 years if I need to upgrade , I will add another EVGA 760 4GB , so that in SLI I will have 2 4GB cards.

Please advise ?

My Current Build is :

MSI GD65 Z87 Board.
240 GB SSD
8GB RAM
i7 4770K upto 3.9Ghz
1000 Watts PSU
NZXT 530 Case
GPU - Big Confussion ?
May be some liquid cooling in future.

Okay, first, when you run two cards in SLi, your VRAM won't double. They will both utilise the 4GB of the first card.

Second, you could go for the 4GB VRAM, but it will be kind of useless for playing games at your res (1080p). Sometimes even the card with less VRAM outperform the ones with more. Regarding the price and your resolution, i would take the 2GB GTX 760 and spent the other 50$ in your future liquid cooling.

GTX 760 is a mid-range card and GTX 770 is high-end, so I would vote for GTX 770 for smooth gameplay. And with a single card you wont need liquid cooling an air cooler is sufficient unless you OC components.

With a single monitor or TV with 1080p 2GB VRAM is enough.

The ONLY time you ever need more then 2 GB in a GPU is when you are a Tripple Monitor setup with a game that has highly modded rez textures. I have a 680 with only 2GB of ram and am playing on a 27" @ 2560x1440 with my high rez mods on Skyrim and it doesnt go above 2GB. So unless you are planning on getting either more monitors and playing games at Higher resolutions then 2GB is all you need. You are playing on a single monitor/TV and either way you go you will probably never go above or even get close to the 2GB limit. I would go with a 770 over the 760 anyway. And I only say that because you are wanting to "Future Proof" as much as you can. If it wasnt for that the 760 would be fine for games @ 1080. But the 770 would last you just tad bit longer cuz its a little more powerful of a GPU.

Thank you for the inputs.

But why I am pulling my leg towards 4GB is for the extra 50$ I am getting double the VRAM right ?
Even though I may not use full 4GB VRAM with current games or video editing stuff but
Dont you think it will act as future proof. If needed based on demanding games.I can just go longer with 4GB for 3 more years right.
I can also avoid the hassles of upgrading and doing SLI etc.

Also if you strictly say to STICK with 2GB , please pick one from below.
Are super clocked cards a good option than normal cards ?

REGULAR
GeForce GTX 760 Core Clock 1085 MHz Boost Clock 1150 MHz CUDA Cores 1152

HAWX EDITION
GeForce GTX 760 Core Clock 1111 MHz Boost Clock 1176 MHz CUDA Cores 1152

The 4GB Version is most likely only needed when you start playing games at 4K or 1440p. If you consider to do that, i do recommend that version. Whenever you don't i would go for the 2GB because of the price. Neither will be a bad choice.

If you go for the 2GB version, i would go for the Superclocked as they are 5-10% better. I personally like EVGA very good, but that is an opinion. MSI is also not bad (Currently having the R7870 Twin Frozr III). It's your choice! :D

I agree that more than 2GB is not worth the money for a GTX760.

As for the ABOVE cards, it's hard to comment as I don't know what company made the first one. What really matters is:

a) Quality/good customer reviews
b) Good, quiet cooler
c) GPU frequency
d) Price (value)

I'm not sure why you're unwilling to spend the money on a GTX770 considering how much you've already spent on your PC, but you don't specify what games you intend to play.

Other:
The GTX760 won't be around in three years, probably not even two years.

The OC'd cards usually come with better coolers for only a few $$ more and they overclock themselves a bit better too. (Yes if you didnt already know the 6xx & 7xx series of Nvidea cards auto OC themselves a bit when they are in use.) For the few extra bux I personally say its worth the better cooler. Only issue there is the better coolers (Cards with 2 fans) blow the air into the case instead of out of the back like the reference coolers do (one fan). Since you were already looking at the 4GB 760's that were the same price as the 2GB 770's, just go pick a 770 that you like the brand/color of and have a field day.

Hi ..
Thank you for the inputs.
Looks like now I changed my mind more to 770 :)
Can you please suggest one best GTX 770 2GB to go for :)
Also is it advisable to go for the 4GB Version of GTX 770 ;(.I dont mind spending that extra 50$ for any of the 4GB versions of 760 or 770.

(The way I am thinking about 4GB card is , Instead of buying 2 2GB 770 and doing SLI for 550$ dont you think It will be good to grab that extra 2 GB VRAM by going for 4GB 770 card and saving that 150$ - Performance wise if 2 2GB 770 yield
90% , I am in the assumption that this single 4GB will cope up atleast 65-70% of what 2 2GB 770 will do in SLI...please suggest )

Ok, the amount of ram/memory has NO impact on performance unless the game/program you are playing is actually trying to use more then the amount of ram on your card. If that ever happens you will notice your frame rate going from something like a smooth 60fps to like 14fps. Basically on a video card your ram is your frame buffer. Once you fill that frame buffer the card will slow down dramatically. At your resolution of only 1080p you will NEVER fill that 2GB frame buffer. So getting a video card with 4GB of ram instead of only 2Gb is a complete waist of money. The only, and I do stress ONLY, reason to get a 4GB card would be if you are planning on doing a triple monitor setup on down the road. Also in some cases a single card with 4GB of ram actually runs slower then a single card with only 2GB of ram. But anyway, if you have good air flow in your case then I would suggest a card with aftermarket cooling (Card with 2 fans or more). If it doesnt have good air flow then get a reference card with only 1 fan at the end of the card. They are all pretty much good quality choices now a days. I have used MSI for a long time and have yet to have any issues with thier products. MSI, ASUS, Galaxy, EVGA, they are all good brands. Basically just pick the card that is within your spending limit that is a brand you or a friend trusts. They are mostly the same.

Hi as per our earlier conversation , the one more factor for considering 4gb 760 is games like BF4 under ultra needs more than 2GB of VRAM and not sure if Maxpayne under ultra also needs this.

Also can you vote for one card
1. MSI GTX 770 2GB - CoreClock 1137 Mhz Boost Clock 1198 Mhz
2. EVGA Superclocked GTX 770 2GB - Core Clock 1111Mhz , BoostClock 1163Mhz (Even though it is superclocked still less Mhz compared to MSI)

To save your time, go with the 760 2gb. This is because games today don't require more than 2gb VRAM with some exceptions and if you're trying to "future proof" By the time games require more than 2gb of VRAM your video card will be outdated.

My final recommendation is to go with the gtx 760 2gb. You can't SLI two different cards. You can SLI the same card and different brand (for example a gigabyte 560 and another asus 560) but you can't SLI a gigabyte 560 and a gigabyte 570.
