Can I have an AMD & an Nvidia card in the same PC?

I was thinking of building a rig with a GTX 780 and R9 290X inside, and have them connected to different monitors (Because I like AMD Mantle and I also prefer Nvidia GeForce cards), money is NOT an issue and I know that I would need something like a 1000W PSU, but is it possible?

Would I be able to run games on one or the other?

Thanks in advance.

Quite a silly thing to do because then you will be using only one card to play games. They won't hold hands and boost one another. Not to mention the trouble of having both drivers installed.

Mantle has not been proven yet but unlike what Traciatim said I think it will be successful, rather than just making a sweeping statement that everything AMD related will end up failing.

And before you ask, Nvidia cards are not able to use Mantle. There is no announcement of Nvidia making something similar.

For now it's better to get either and not both. Custom cooler 290Xs are out at Newegg (although they are out of stock). A 780 Ti will use up to 250W while the 290X can eat up to 400W. Add a fair amount 250W for the rest of the system and you...

How do you know you like Mantle if it isn't even out yet and no one has any ideas about it's performance differences. If it's like naything AMD related it will probably follow the story of "Hype, Hype, Hype, Hype, Delay, Fail".

Though you can do what you want, there is no advantage to it. You can run 2 monitors off Crossfire, or SLI, or each on their single cards and not have the cards work together but have far more flexibility if you buy the same cards. The plan to run it like that is simply full of disadvantages and you gain nothing over a regular dual card setup.

So I should stick with the single 780 then?
Or do I get a 780 Ti?
