Hi, so I have an old laptop, it's running windows xp. Now I want to upgrade it to w8 from a flash drive, because I can't find my install CD, however I have the key written. So I got the iso, extracted it, copied the files over the flash drive. When I try to boot it, it says "the boot configuration for your pc is missing or contains errors". What is this madness??

laptop specs:
Acer aspire/Pentium 4 @~3GHz/1Gb ram/80Gb HDD

Btw, laptop's built-in monitor isn't working, so I have it connected to an external monitor. Thank you for answers.

Go into the BIOS

I forgot the exact name since its been a while

It will say boot from DVD DRIVE

Click that and with the FLASH DRIVE CONNECTED select that and reboot it.

Also make sure its the correct bit (32 or 64)

Did you mean Bios>boot and then selecting dvd-rom as primary boot drive and flash drive as a secondary boot drive?

How did you create the install DVD? Just copying won't work.

You 'made an image of a Windows 8 DVD', or you 'downloaded it from a site' ?
Which is it?

well..in your now deleted response, you said "I downloaded it from a site"
Just asking, because unless it is a purchased, valid Windows 8 license....this discussion will end. Period.

The laptop is too old for windows 8 and lacks support for the new formatting for hdd's in the bios.

Vista is your only hope, that laptop is old so there are no drivers for it for win8. Look on the Acer's site for drivers for your laptop. If there are only winxp drivers then you are stuck with xp. There is a good chance that they made drivers for Vista that came out in 2007 and possibly windows7.
I really doubt win8 drivers exist for it.

Vista is not so bad, but the updates are insane. You will need to let windows update do it's 150 updates overnight. And then install sp1 and update again. And sp2. Upgrade the ie to the newest one, ect.

The P4 is 32bit x86 only so the 64 versions will not run on it.

And why would you think a 'messed up' ISO when copied elsewhere...would actually work?
1. Why didn't you just download it again from Microsoft, and then burn that to DVD?
2. That old, slow P4 is really, really going to struggle. If it can do it at all.
