I have an asus notebook and need to make my 2.0 external HD work. It makes a noise when its plugged in but doesn't load nor is it acknowledged. I also have windows 8. The system info says I need a 3.0 HD ... can't I use an adapter of some sort?

Thanks

USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0, so it will work. However, unless the USB 2.0 HDD (hard disk drive) has an external power source, you will need a pigtail cable with two USB 2.0 plugs for the laptop, in order to provide enough power. USB 3.0 drives can be powered from only one USB 3 port, but USB 2 external HDDs without external power need two USB ports to drive them.
