Modular Power Supply Units

Solution
Modular or fixed is really up to you, there are no performance differences and if you don't have a case with a window or feel the need to keep everything super tidy modular isn't a must. A lot of modular units are quite good(they are the premium units after all) but you can find quite good non-modular units as well, its more important to find a good unit in your price range.

Preference of price over neatness. Some say (and as an electrician I concur) that breaks in low voltage hi amp supply lines (caused by the modular cable plugs) are to be avoided as a potential voltage loss and breakdown trouble spot,(Loose connections WILL get hot and melt) but if it is a good manufacturer go with what suits your needs.

Jonnyguru looked into this a while ago, here is an article written by him prior to him starting up his own site.

Basically the 18 inches of cable between the connectors show a much larger voltage drop than the connectors themselves. It is also important to realize that you aren't working with very high currents per pin, if you have a PCI-e line with 2 8 pin connectors that are both fully loaded that means you have 3 12V lines feeding 300W or 25A or 8.333A per pin, thats not super high current through the pin and that is the absolute worst case you will be able to pull off, for the most part you are dealing with less than 5A per pin.

There are heating problems but it is usually between the normal connectors and the motherboard when debris or something gets in and causes a poor contact, for the most part though modular connectors don't cause an issue. Just spreading knowledge.
