R9 280X minimum power supply

Hi there,

I am building mining rig and using 2 Asus R9 280X with 4 GB ram and AMD processor.
How much minimum power supply/psu do I need? (crossfire recommended?)

Second: I want to build custom mining rig with 5 R9 280X, would 1200 W power supply be enough?

PS: I built one computer and used Antec 850W power supply. The computer automatically shut down and restarted few times. Is the power supply not enough?

One 280x uses a maximum of 260W. Two 280x's would use 520W and there is no reason for the rest of your PC to be consuming 300W unless you have overclocked. If so then that could be the cause of the shut downs. Also 1.2kW is definelty not enough for 5 280x cards. You would need a minimum of 1.5kW and that's without overclocking

And what could be the possible reason for restarts? if not power. Everything is brand new..

If you look at the benchmarks for the 280x under maximum loads it reaches 207w (last figure was for bitmining) This figure is for gaming (metro last night max settings).

Why do you need 5 280x might I ask? 4 would work with a 1.2kW psu with overclocking but 5 won't cut it.
