I recently purchased an FX-6300 and misunderstood the backwards compatibility. I have an HP Pavilion p6616f and it has an AM3 socket but the 6300 is AM3+. Would I be better off purchasing a new motherboard or returning the 6300 for a CPU with AM3. I bought it for gaming. Any advice would be great.

You will be better off buying a new Motherboard as AM3 processors are pretty much dead.

Problem with getting new board, is that you need a new case too and possibly a new copy of windows. That is why I made the move to building my own so many years ago. No proprietary crap to deal with. You might be better off returning it and getting a compatible CPU. What graphics card do you currently have?

Any µATX form factor motherboard should fit into the HP Pavilion p6616f Desktop's case.

Front panel connectors are proprietary. There are ways around it, but in the end, it is easier just to buy a different case.

The graphics card I have is an asus hd 7750. I recently added the graphics card, a new power supply and increased the memory. So you think it would just be easier to get a new case and motherboard?

The issue is not the mATX form factor ... the issue is the OEM Windows OS is keyed to the current Foxconn motherboard/chipset.

The OP may not legally replace the motherboard and reinstall the OS unless it is a "maintenance replacement" (see the EULA) ... typically, a compatible motherboard/chipset.

If a similar motherboard/chipset is not available for maintenance replacement, he would need to choose a model as close as possible, and likely re-validate his OS over the phone ... i.e., no moving into a 990FX-chipset upgrade with a bunch of improved 'bells and whistles'

He might, however, snag something like the GA-78LMT-USB3 (which is a 760-chipset) BUT it has USB3, and he would be subject to the good graces of MS for validation and activation.

Does a µATX AMD 990FX chipset motherboard even exist?
