I saw on geekbench that they benchmarked a dell inspiron 580 with an Intel Core i7 870 processor. If this is possible, I would love to buy one right away, but is that possible. Everywhere I have looked, the 580 is only compatible up to the i5-760, but that is all old information. Would anybody know for sure?

This was the GeekBench info:

I read that the H57 motherboard supports the i7 socket 1156 chips, however Dell never offered a BIOS upgrade with support for the i7. That forum was dated back in mid-2012, I didn't know if there was a more recent upgrade with support for the i7 or no.

i have the same specs as geekbench. Did you find if it work on your pc?

Old thread, but still... from the link that rgd1101 provided:

"I just want to confirm for anybody that has this older PC like I do that you can indeed stick an i7-870 in the motherboard and it will work fine. Just because Dell did not "support" the i7 in this motherboard, does not mean the chipset and Windows will not recognize it. My BIOS, which is revision A07 from 2010, recognizes the CPU as an i7-870 with hyperthreading. I feel like many of the other threads I read on this topic were misleading by so called experts who said it would not work, so I tried it myself and it works just fine."

Since P55, the first released chipset did originally support the i7-870 with no BIOS update needed, why would the H57 (released by Intel much later), Dell or whatever BIOS, not support it?

That is my system I was testing out with GeekBench. In fact, I'm using it right now. I wanted to speed up this old machine, and it's working great. As long as you have the latest bios A07, it starts right up after swapping out the CPU. This system used to have an i3-550. If you have any questions, let me know.
