Ethernet cable connected, no internet.

Yesterday something weird happened.
I was at a friends house, and and plugged my Ethernet cable from my pc into his router, but nothing happened. I tried resetting the router several times, tried different ports, and also tried 3 different Ethernet cables with no success, yet my other 2 friends had no problems (wireless and cable).
It just said "Not connected" and when I did "troubleshoot" it just said plug in Ethernet cable.

When I came home nothing had changed, I still couldn't connect to the internet, so I tried the usual reset router & modem several times, still nothing, I also tried resetting my BIOS settings to default without any success.
I also noticed that my PC went from taking 2mins to start up to 5mins.

When I went to "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections" it was blank, and I realized it had to be a software/hardware problem.
When I went and checked "Device Manager" there weren't even a "Network adapters", wondering how the [language] this happed I searched my motherboard, and installed the Network driver: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3010#dl
"Realtek LAN Driver" but during the installation it said:
"Realtek Ethernet Controller Driver
The Realtek Network Controller was not found. If Deep Sleep Mode is enabled Please Plug the Cable."
and ended the installation after.

Now when I press "troubleshoot" I says:
"Install a driver for your network adapter
Windows did not detect a properly installed network adapter. If you have a network adapter, you will need to re-install the driver."

When I look on the back of my computer, the bulb next to the Ethernet port lights solid, even when
I unplug the cable, but there is no flashing light.

So what do I do? Can the problem be solved by re-installing windows, installing other kind of software, buying a new ethernet port or adapter?

My setup is:
CPU: Phenom II x4 965
RAM: 4GB DDR3 CL7
GFX: 5850 CF
MB: GA-MA790XT-UD4P
HDD: WD Black WD1502FAEX 1.5TB

My best guess is that the port is fried. Worse, there is only one Ethernet port on that board. I may be wrong, but what I'd try is disabling that port in the BIOS (if it can do that; I don't know that board's bios) and putting in a network card - you have a few lying around, don't you? If it works, then your port was definitely fried.

But I'm prejudiced - during one storm, every connected Ethernet and HDMI port in my house was fried by a nearby lightning strike. The ones that were not connected at the time are just fine - I had an Ethernet switch with five good ports and three dead ones, just moved the cables!

di you try the new material detection in the control panel and it if is not working then the ehternet chipset is out since this mitherboard should be out of warranty i would buy a pci eteret card to put her in the system ,you could also check in the bios if the network chipset is not disable .

I would say it sounds like hardware that your onboard NIC might of went. But I still check the BIOS to make sure the onboard NIC is enabled. If you have a space PCI slot try added in a NIC card and see if the computer sees that.

I tried that, but the installation failed

Yea, you might be right about it being fried. Well I can disable it in the BIOS, but I don't really have a spare networking card lying around, I'll have to ask around.

What is this "New material detection" you speak of? I've checked BIOS and it is enabled

It is enabled, but I don't have a spare card to check it atm.

Yes it might be the best option, and if I don't know anyone with a card lying around, it'll be worth the purchase.

Nah - it works like this.
"Oh, dear, the only network port on my motherboard is fried."
"I will have to buy a new motherboard."
"I'm buying a new motherboard. Modern ones don't support this old processor - better get a nice new processor so I can buy a decent motherboard."
"What a waste of money buying a motherboard with SATA III ports and crippling it with this old rotating HDD. Better get a nice big SSD so I'm not wasting my money."
And so forth...
