I am dead-on brand new to the world of building computers. I haven't a clue on what to put where on these fancy "motherboards" and "optical drives". However, one of my cousins is somewhat of an expert at assembling these computers. I got $500 for my birthday and really want to build my own gaming PC. My cousin taught me what went where, and he referenced me to some building and part-choosing videos on YouTube. So, after a few days of mind-boggling, intense research, I have slapped together a list of parts.

Case: Antec VSK3000E
Power Supply: CoolMax ZX-500
Motherboard: Intel DQ45EK
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon R9 270
Optical Drive: (Something I fished out of my age-old PC that works perfectly fine)

Can someone who is an expert please help me figure out if these components are compatible and what to do about the HDD and the memory of the PC?

Thanks.

for starters, you can do far better with $500 than a core 2 duo. the cpu is a major bottle neck.

I'll try to work something out real quick at the price point thats more balanced.

Thanks a lot for the setup, but I solely needed help on mainly the processor and memory. Since you seem to know your way around the computer world, can you please make sure this list is a good one that is compatible, and can run games? I already have an optical drive, and I have tried to save as much money as I can, WITHOUT cheating-out on the power supply. I had also went for a more cost-efficient video card. Thanks.

If you want to check my list, here is the link:

Well technically, it is all physically compatible. however, the motherboard should have an 8-pin supplemental power connecter for the CPU. The 970 and 990 chipsets from AMD are much better for the fx chips than the others like the 960 selected.

The system will run games. Which and how well however is another story. For example, many games like BF4 require a minimum of 4gb of system Ram. The GPU will meet minimum requirements for BF4 and other games.

I noticed that the build you did came out to $355. So do you also need OS inside the $500? that kinda slipped my mind :p
If so, this build comes in under budget with full compatibility and meets minimum requirements on many more games wit the extra ram.

My father works for a company that can get us free Windows 8 CD's, so I'm not really concerned. :D However, I toyed around with your logical design to come up with a better graphics card. I also went for some cheaper components such as the case. But with the new changes, is it compatible and a good setup for gaming? What do you think? I REALLY appreciate you spoon feeding me through the PC building, you don't know how thankful I am! Thanks!

Its no problem, I love to help.

You have a great build put together. The only thing I might change is using a 2gb gpu like the 270 I substituted into your build here:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2u3qR
The added memory on the gpu will help gaming using higher resolutions. The r9 270 is a great choice below $200. A 2gb 660 would also be a good choice, but the 270 beats it out in gaming benchmarks according to the toms hardware review of the 270.

My concerns are, since I went for a cheaper case and fan, will the performance be affected? It's better to have an aftermarket fan then the stock fan, but since I cheaped out, I'm afraid that the stock fan may perform better than the actual separate fan. I upped the design once again, too! :) http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2uZpK

The case has nothing really to do with performance. If your temperatures are higher than you are comfortable with, you can buy an extra intake fan down the road.

For the aftermarket heatsink, I wouldn't waste money on a cheap one since its pretty much the same as a stock cooler. I would save the money for a nicer one that would have a noticeable effect on temperatures and noise.

Heatsink and fan performance is only noise and temperature. The only ways it can effect gaming or other application performance is if the fan/heatsink cant keep up with the cpu's heat resulting in thermal throttling, or it keeps your cpu cool enough that you can make it work faster than it was told to by the factory (overclocking)

I checked the incompatability error showing up on pcpartpicker. You shouldn't have to worry about that, the R2.0 bios supports the 6300 and other vishera processors out of the box.

I'm sure, the AsRock site shows that the 6300 is compatible with all bios versions on the 970 pro3 R2.0. I tried checking forums as well, most other 970 boards needed bios updates, but the pro3 R2.0 did not :)

Stick with the 6300 and 970 pro3 R2.0, the 4130 not only lacks the 2 extra cores, but the older architecture of the x1xx chips (Zambezi) is nowhere as good as the x3xx chips (vishera)

Thanks! I will stick with the PRO3 and 6300! I was starting to get a little concerned, from the compatibility issue. I checked which optical drive I got from my old PC, and it turned out to be a Samsung TS-H493. Is this compatible with the rest of the components? Sorry for hammering you with so many questions, but a noob's gotta do what a noob's gotta do! :D

Yes, the drive uses sata plugs, the psu and mobo will come with new cables that are compatible with the old drive :)

Don't worry about it, any one who was ever good at something always started as a noob :)

Hehe, since I don't really know if the size is right, do all cases have space for a 5.25 inch optical drive? Does this optical drive fit all 5.25 inch drive case slots?

I cant imagine a case lacking them, the specifications will tell you how many. The gigabyte case selected has 3.

The 5.25" drive bay is a standard thing, any 5.25" drive bay item will fit. :p

OK! Will the mentioned graphics card be running simulators on high settings, like Trainz Simulator? And I might as well add I occasionally play Minecraft and Black Ops 2 and Battlefield 4. Hopefully this card can keep up with them games!!! XD

lol i checked trainz simulator 2012 and you will must definitely be able to do that. I linked the site I checked so you can see how overkill the r9 270 is hahaha It will be doing more than keeping up!

http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=4196&game=Trainz+Simulator+2012&p_make=AMD&p_deriv=FX-6300&gc_make=ATI&gc_deriv=Radeon+R9+270&ram=4&checkSubmit=#systemRequirements

minecraft is very simple and not demanding, don't worry about it. Black ops 2 and bf4 are both within the bounds of the setup :) Once again I used game-debate's 'can I run it?' feature just to confirm. If you check the system requirements or recommended requirements of any game it will tell you what you need for the game. :)

I haven't done enough real world shopping to know sorry :(

Driving past a Fry's I saw that they matched on wifi /:
I would check your local places, but from my experience with local computer businesses, they order the parts online from their provider. You would pay their provider's price, their cut, and shipping. :(

I'd assume that in my area, Fry's, Best Buy, and Circuit City (Closing soon D: ) are my top 3 PC hardware stores...

But... Apart from that, do you think the case I chose will be able to fit my GPU and, if chosen later, an aftermarket fan?
