Hi, i just wanted to know if it was possible to try and attempt to overclock an Nvidia GeForce GT 640 GDDR5 to match the clock speeds of a reference Nvidia GeForce GTX 650. Essentially most people say the Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 is just a faster version of the Nvidia GeForce GT 640 because of the GDDR5 memory and the higher clock speeds. Since the Nvidia GeForce GT 640 card i have already has GDDR5 memory which is the same as the one the GTX 650 uses i wanted to know if i could match the clock speeds of the GTX 650 being 1058 mhz on the core to achieve just about the same level of performance as the GTX 650. On my current GT 640 the clock is 1046 mhz on the core and the memory clock is about 5000 mhz i believe which is also the same as the GTX 650. Please do keep in mind this is a GDDR5 version of the GT 640, not the slower GDDR3. Also i don't think this is important but the card specifications say it is a 64-bit card. Just one other thing i would like to know, is the GDDR5 version of the GT 640 faster than the Radeon HD 7750? I have looked many places but no one has compared the GDDR5 version of the GT 640 to the Radeon HD 7750. Only the GDDR3 version of the GT 640 was compared to the Radeon HD 7750 and i do believe the GDDR3 version is much much slower. Thank you all for taking the time to help answer the questions i have.

You cannot put both of them on the same motherboard, as they are SIGNIFICANTLY different GPU's. It just will not work, even if you overclock, the GTX 650 will be bottlenecked by the GT 640, a much slower GPU. You will literally have better performance using ONLY the gtx 650.

I think you may have misunderstood the question i had in mind. I wasn't going to put a GTX 650 on the same motherboard lol. I just wanted to know if i were to overclock the GT 640 GDDR5 to about the same clock speeds as the GTX 650 what kind of results i would see. I also would like to know how the GT 640 GDDR5 version compares to the Radeon HD 7750 in terms of real world performance. Please note i did say GT 640 GDDR5 not GT 640 GDDR3.

Oh, my bad :D lol sorry about that. In that case, the performance will still be 10-20% lower than a GTX 650 because the GT is the "mainstream series" which means some of the card is "locked" (basically not able to be used) while the GTX series is the "gaming series" more cores unlocked, while the Nvidia Quadro's and Tesla's have all the cores unlocked. For your real life comparison, the HD 7750 easily beats the GT 640 in everything: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-7750-vs-GeForce-GT-640 just scroll down to the gaming section and you'll see somewhat better to much better frame rates.

Oh ok i understand what your saying but does GDDR5 make a difference for the GT 640? Because the one you also linked is also DDR3. So will having the GDDR5 version make it somewhat closer in performance to the GTX 650 or the Radeon HD 7750 at all? Or should the Radeon HD 7750 have been the best choice from the start? Also as far as i know Nvidia Quadros and Teslas are workstation-class cards and not really built for gaming so they have more cores unlocked then?

Also if you could recommend me a good graphics card for a dell inspiron 660 that would be nice because i was planning to install the GT 640 GDDR5 in my system but if you can think of a better card for less than $150 that would be great.

Specs about the dell inspiron 660:

PSU:300w
CPU:i5-3330 Quad-Core Ivy Bridge running at 3.0 Ghz with 3.2 Ghz boost speed
RAM:8GB in dual channel mode at 1600mhz
MoBo Slots: Only one PCI-E x16 slot (not sure if its PCI-E Rev 3.0 or 2.0 or 2.1 or 1.0 so don't ask me lol) (if there is a way for me to tell what the revision of my PCI-E x16 slot on my motherboard is please tell me how to, all i know is that there is only ONE PCI-E slot on my motherboard that is for sure x16. I have 3 other PCI-E slots but they are x1 slots so yeah.)
Ports needed on the GPU: 1x HDMI
Current GPU:Intel HD 2500 Graphics

Hopefully that would be enough info because thats what i can think of off the top of my head. Also just so you don't ask later, no the PSU DOES NOT have a 6-pin PCI-E power connector or any molex cables only sata power cables and thats about it plus other cables for the board and optical drive.

So are questions like these to hard for people these days or is this post just highly, highly unnoticable to people im just saying because i didn't think i would need to wait very long to recieve responses on the thread i have created. Anyways i will be installing an Nvidia GeForce GT 640 (GDDR5) version from Zotac in my Dell Inspiron 660 soon. I listed a few specifications about the Dell Inspiron 660 that i have in a previous post so if you want to know the specs you can go and have a look other than that i just want to say Happy New Years! To anyone that well i guess will ever read this post...i guess idk.

The GDDR5 GT640 usually only has a 64 bit memory bus compared to the 650's 128 bit. This means that memory bandwidth is HALF.

There are reports of some OEM GT640's having 128 bit memory making them nearly as fast as the 650. With an OC they would be the same.
