Can't go from 8.1 preview to final version?!

I bought a laptop earlier this year with Windows 8 on it. A few months ago I downloaded the 8.1 preview from the Microsoft website. Now, despite all of their "directions" on the site, I cannot go from the preview to the final version. It seems like I should be able to do this from the Microsoft Store but this will not open for me. I tried a different route but it asks for a product key. I don't remember if I have received one, or where to find it if I indeed have one. Any help would be much appreciated.

On their site, it says that as of Jan.15 if you have not upgraded from the preview to the full version your computer will restart every 2 hours..so there has to be a direct conversion right?

No. There is not a direct conversion from Win 8.1 Preview to Win 8.1.

Update from Windows 8.1 Preview to Windows 8.1
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/update-from-preview

"My PC was running Windows 8 before I installed the preview

If your PC was running Windows 8 you might be able to restore it back to Windows 8 by using PC refresh. Your personal files won't be affected, but apps that did not come with the PC will need to be reinstalled and apps that you installed while using the preview might not be available through the Windows 8 Store. To find out more about using PC refresh, see Restore, refresh, or reset your PC. "

So....you might be able to bring it back to Win 8, and then upgrade to the actual 8.1.
