Can the DELL Optiplex XE (E8400 intel core2duo) take 16GB RAM

Solution
to your first question, 16GB is the limit and it's up to the motherboard manufacture to decided how much a slot can access but in your case it would be 4GB per slot.

To you second and third question, as you have four memory slots the manufacture simplifies how to enable dual channel mode (two black, two white or all four). The answer is yes (2 slots = 1 memory channel) if they are inserted in one black and in one white slot.

The ram that you wish you take is not bad choice for the future if you wish to go to X79 board as they tested and made sure from the memory manufacture they work in Quadchannel mode.

Well i have the Dell Optiplex XE Small Form Factor (http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/optiplex-xe/pd)and i will be installing vmware vsphere/esxi 5.5 64 bit
So does that mean i can install 4 x 4GB = 16GB? What about the processor limit? Does the E8400 core2duo proceesor have memory limit? Or maybe motherboard limit?

I am trying to get this RAM http://www.ebay.com/itm/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-Series-8GB-2-x-4GB-240-Pin-DDR3-SDRAM-DDR3-1600-PC3-12800-De-/181292257472?pt=US_Memory_RAM_&hash=item2a35dc50c0

Will they work? The current one in the server are these http://www.ebay.com/itm/261228290285?nma=true&si=A75qNUttyTHesGTckjJQs0WGn%2Fw%3D&rt=nc&_trksid=p4340.l2557&orig_cvip=true

16GB should go as chipset Q45 Express support it, however the memory will run at 1333MHz. Keep them as you can make use of the full potential of the memory later within next build.

The cpu has no memory limits but the chipset has which is already mentioned.

G-SKILL will most likely not work with the current two 2 GB as they have different latency. I recommend to take two packs of the mentioned G-SKILL. I don't know if the memory modules are colored schemed, if they are then make sure that the two 2GB ram sticks are placed on the same color and then two G-SKILL ram stick cover the other color, however I don't guarantee that it will work problem free.

Alright that is not a problem..because i will remove the 2GB ones and replace all slots with the 4GB ones. Also what is the limit of the Q45 chipset? 4GB per slot?

Also when i read http://ark.intel.com/products/36527/82Q45-Graphics-and-Memory-Controller-Hub i noticed that one has 2 memory channels...and that means it can take 8GB...but mine has 4 slots...is 4 slots same as memory channels? or 2 slots = 1 memory channel?

Just to add...the 4 slots are 2 pairs of different color...one pair(2 slots) is black and the other pair(2 slots) is white. So does this mean 2 memory channels?

Thinking of getting this http://www.ebay.com/itm/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-Series-16GB-4-x-4GB-240-Pin-DDR3-SDRAM-DDR3-1600-PC3-12800-D-/301035020100?pt=US_Memory_RAM_&hash=item461715df44

Thanks

Well i got something promising here http://www.kingston.com/us/memory/search/Default.aspx?DeviceType=2&Mfr=DEL&Line=Optiplex&Model=58386&DisPart=&Description=Kingston_System_Specific_Memory_for_Dell_Optiplex_780_DT_/_MT_/_SFF

Standard Memory:

2GB (Removable) or

4GB (Removable)
Maximum Memory:

4GB using 32-bit OS

16GB using 64-bit OS
Expansions:

4 Socket(s)
CPU / Chipsets:

Intel Core 2 Quad / Intel Q45

Intel Core 2 Duo / Intel Q45

Intel Celeron Dual Core / Intel Q45

It states that Intel Q45 chipset for Core 2 Duo processors can take 4GB RAM modules...and the Optiplex XE uses the Intel Q45 chipset

Cant wait to confirm this!
Cha Ching!
