I bought and installed a new Radeon R290 card, and I installed the latest drivers from AMD's site (13.12).

However I can't get any sensor data from it:

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I have yet to plug any monitors into it (My DVI-I -> VGA adapters don't fit in the DVI-D ports :pfff:) I bought 2 of these at the same time and put one in my roommate's computer. He has an hdmi monitor, so he was able to hook a monitor up and use it as his primary card. He does get sensor data just fine.

For the moment I'm using an old junker 8500GT (nvidia) to access windows but will remove it once I fetch some DVI-D adapters. Maybe driver conflicts?

Is there something wrong with my card or do I just need to hook a monitor up to it first?

I'm loath to admit doing so here, but I was able to run cgminer on the card. My concern is that whatever functionality is supposed to throttle the clock speed and/or increase fan speed might not be doing its job without any sensor data. After running for some time, the heatsink became too hot to touch.

I do see the fans spinning, but whereas I can manually increase the fan speed on my roommate's card and hear an audible change, I don't hear the change on my card when I try to manually increase the RPM. Therefore I suspect the fans might be staying at some low RPM even though the chip is getting very hot.

Thanks for your help swifty_morgan! I had thought my roommate was already asleep so I wasn't going to bother him to let me try using his monitor. Turned out he was still awake, so we brought his monitor up and I plugged it into my new card and booted. With the monitor plugged in I did get sensor data! Whew so I think the card is fine.

CCC is installed, but it listed very few options (no overdrive or anything). However the options did become available, including overdrive, once the monitor was plugged in.
