Hello,

I was wondering if I could use my motherboards ethernet without having a wlan. it glows when I plug it in but I get no connection

Yes, you can use your Ethernet without Internet or a wireless network -- you just need something else with an Ethernet connector to attach to -- and since your motherboard has a gigabit adapter you do not necessarily need a crossover cable.

You can also just directly plug an Ethernet cable from your motherboard adapter to an LAN port on a router -- that is a far better connection than any wireless connection.
