external hard disk error (Needs to reformat this disk) with 0 total disk space and 0 remaining disk space

i have a 500 gig external hard disk that is not working perfectly, as i plugged in my external hard disk an error pops up saying "You need to format this drive in order to use it". i canceled the pop up and check the properties of my hard drive. it appears it has 0 bytes total space and 0 bytes available free space. i have a lot of files saved on that hard drive. i did everything, i googled procedures to recover files from this type of problem, i did the disk checking but it has no effect (chkdsk is not available for RAW drivers) i also installed the FindAndMount software but it doesnt read my external hard disk only my internal hard drive. im run out of options so i decided to ask question on websites like this. can anyone help me please. :(

    Hi there

I seen this before, is this in an inclosure that you purchased and you installed the drive or was built in?

Either way check disk management see if you see it there.

Press windows key and R key are the same time type in the run box diskmgmt.msc press enter look for it here. if it is that big of drive you should see the size and maybe unallocated in the partition type. Disks are show as disk 0 disk 1 etc. if you do not see that drive it may have USB circuit board issues and may need replaced. see if you have a warranty yet I have had three inclosures fail on me in the last year. I finely just installed that drive in my system as a second drive.
  2. thanks for the reply Dave 8671, it seems like my hard disk is broken. i tried formatting it coz i run out of options then the system prompt me that is it not possible. i think its dead now although it doesnt have the ticking sound of death. i guess i give up :( thanks again for your answer :D
