Hi there.

I just bought a Dell XPS 8700 (16GB RAM, 2TB HDD) with AMD Radeon R9 270 with 2GB GDDR5.

I am using this PC for 3D modeling ( Autocad Revit, 3DS Max, Rhino and grasshopper) for my architecture studies at uni.

I was advised the graphic card is not as capable for 3D workstation class machine. But this is all I can afford at the moment. I am looking to replace/upgrade the graphic card very soon.

Can someone help me and recommend me a better card for my purpose that can fit the PC. I am happy to replace the existing card. I have read somewhere that I can upgrade this card but need to also upgrade the PSU of the machine. I am not a hardware guru so any explanation is much appreciated from the community.

I would stay in the same series, so upgrade to an AMD Radeon R9 280 (for ~$350) or the AMD Radeon R9 290 (for ~$500).
I hope I helped, if so please select this as the best answer! If not, ask me any questions!

I was thinking about that but none of the cards including the installed card support gpu based rendering. I dont mind if the apps I use utilize the cpu during modeling but was hoping the graphic card would do the rendering and free up the processor.

I was reading in one of the autocad forum, I should look into nvidia quadro series for this capability but not sure which one that can fit the slot require no changes to the power requirement.

Any video card will fit in the slot, and the power requirements will be almost the same all around. PCIe 2.0 and PCIe 3.0 (either of these you might have) do not have much of a difference and they are the same slot, except PCIe 3.0 is has a little bit better things, not noticeable really.

I also have a Dell XPS 8700. I am interested in upgrading my video card and have been doing some reading on the topic. You need to know more about the specs of your computer. It is a good possibility you will have to also upgrade your Power Supply if you upgrade your card. My Comp came with a Geforce GT 635 and a 460w PSU. The other thing to figure in is the size of your case. My 8700 case is a mini tower, so you may want to be careful, do some measuring.
