Can thermal paste go bad?

I have been having a lot of issues with my machine lately. Lots of crashes. I have tried multiple things but nothing had worked.

I have an I5 2500k with stock fan. Temps idle in the high 30s and go up to the 60-70's in games such as BF4. I have seen it to go the 90's in crowded areas of TSW. I started crashing about a month ago while using the speakers to game. I stopped using the speakers and the crashes stopped. Crashes started again a few weeks ago. I changed the thermal paste and still crashed and so I ruled it out and moved onto other things. Everything else seems to be working okay though.

So, earlier today I started looking at videos and noticed that my artic silver 5 is not very liquid. It's more like clay than liquid. I bought it off the store nearly 8 months ago. It had probably been sitting there for years.

If you look at the second video the paste looks gray and rather liquid. Mine is darker and thougher. My guess is that mine has gone bad and that is the reason for the crashes. Does it seem reasonable?

That being said, I am going back to Mx. Since, I am buying that I was thinking about upgrading my heatsink. Could I get some help with that? I'm not looking to overclock or anything fancy. I'm just looking for an upgrade that will get the job done. Somebody else was helping me a few days ago but I would like to see a few more options before deciding.

Thanks.

I'm sure if thermal paste sat around long enough, it could go bad.

As for replacing your cooler/heat sink, lots of people around here swear by the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo. I haven't used one personally but it does get very good reviews.

Of course it can go bad, or stop being a good thermal conductor!

If thermal compound is run long enough to completely dry out and turn to literally a baked layer of clay it can become useless as a thermal conductor and should be replaced!

Yeah, mine feels a lot like dried out glue or hard clay. There is very lil or no moisture in it.

Suppose that is time to start looking for a fan then. The Evo seems to be out of stock on NE.
Any others I could look into?

AS 5 has never been liquid; it's a paste. I've had mine for at least 4 or 5 years and it still is fine. Make sure you don't apply too much thermal paste; its sole purpose is to fill the voids between the CPU and the heat sink.
