Monitor turns itself off when resolution changes.

Hi all,

Was just wondering if you guys could help me out here. Basically, whenever I open a game which automatically changes the resolution, mostly old games, my monitor turns itself off (fully off, no light on at all), and won't turn back on unless I unplug, leave it for a few seconds, and re-plug in. If I haven't managed to close the game, the monitor comes on for 1-2s and then switches off again. Examples of when this has happened are: When starting Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, when starting Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, and when attempting to install C&C: Red Alert 2 (the resolution changes for the install guide). Every time this happens I pretty much have to force shut down my PC in order to close the game to get the monitor back on.

System etc:
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670K CPU @ 3.40
8.00 GB RAM
Sapphire Radeon R7 260X OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
2TB HDD

Monitor:
HP w2207h

Additionally, occasionally the screen also goes black for a second or two before coming back, and more recently still the monitor has gone to sleep randomly and claims no input signal when my PC is still on and running (any sounds/music continue).

Thanks for your help.

Hi crookedmouth,

When you say changing the resolutions within windows, do you mean right-click desktop->screen resolutions and changing the setting there? If so, no, this doesn't cause issues (beyond the obvious expected blurriness etc.).

When I tried to increase the refresh rate, there is no option at all to do so, in the pull down where you described there is only one option, 60Hz.

I had previously tried updating the driver for both monitor and graphics card, and have just updated the driver again, all to no avail.

Sorry, that's normal in Windows. I was thinking of my nVidia control panel for changing refresh rate. AMD's CCC should have refresh rate settings. Try 75Hz.

When you say when trying to install graphics card and monitor drivers, "all to no avail", do you mean they are up to date?

It has to be driver or settings related. Your card is telling your monitor to do something it can't.

Hi again,

When I try to change the refresh rate in AMD CCC to 75Hz, it forces me to use 1280x1024 resolution. Accepting this and trying to change back to 1650x1080 while in 75Hz auto changes back to 60Hz. Additionally, trying to run the games in 1280x1024 @ 75Hz results in the same issue, monitor turns itself off.

Sorry, yes I meant they are up to date, which doesn't seem to have affected the issue at all sadly.
