I am a novice by all accounts and in saying that I am looking to upgrade a build I did in March of 2013. It was my first one and it got me hooked on building rigs. Here is what I have currently:
Case: Rosewill Thor V2-W
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD5H LGA 1155 Intel Z77
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo)
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB DDR3 1600
PSU: TOPOWER TOP 800W 80 PLUS SILVER
SSD: SAMSUNG 840 Series 120GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST 2GB 192-bit
I am selling the motherboard, CPU, RAM, PSU, and the GPU. I am keeping the case, and drives.
My thoughts currently are to upgrade to this configuration.
Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS VI EXTREME LGA 1150 Intel Z87
CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K Haswell 3.5GHz
RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 2133
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P2 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified 1000W
GPU: MSI R9 290X 4GD5 Radeon R9 290X Video Card
I am working with a $2k budget to upgrade with. My RAM, I am leaving for expansion when it becomes needed. Currently I only need 16 GB, or so I feel. My biggest issue is my GPU. I want to be able to run the latest and greatest without breaking my bank and sacrificing in a different area all due to the inflation of the GPU’s currently. Any help and constructive insight is welcome.

No, and as mentioned might save a few bucks and go to the Hero, thats the one I decided on and figure I'll have it in use by me for a minimum of 3-4 years and then it will get passed to one of the kids or grandkids

Are you looking to run XFire in the future? if so x2 or x3? Asking because 1000 watt PSU woul be for about 3 GPUs, if looking no further than 1 or 2 GPUs could Drop to an 800 fairly easily and also drop the mobo to the Asus Hero. For DRAM and your combo, I'd look at 2x8GB Gskill Tridents in 2133 or 2400 - also will want a cooler for the CPU - if OC plans don't exceed 4.5 take a look at the Hyper 212 EVO or a step up to a Phantek

I may be in the future and know little about it aside from I have been advised that currently running dual or more GPU's causes some issues for the current games. With the PSU I have been told to plan for upgrading and to set myself up for it by going with 1000w and no less right away. The Trident X, I believe, are not in the QVL on ASUS but I'd love look into those if it has been deemed compatible. The other issue I see is the voltage with the CPU and the RAM. The Tridents are 1.6V and it is advised to not go over 1.5V. Again, I am new at this so I am not sure if I can do that or if I will be wasting money. I had the Maximus Formula VI as my first choice in MOBO, but again, was advised to look to the top end for future proofing. I did forget that I have a H100i as my projected CPU cooler.

QVLs are pretty much worthless to be honest, see here:

and unless you plan tri XFire, SLI or better 1000 watts is pretty worthless also (money wise) with your parts and all a 600 is more than sufficient (42 AMPS on the 12 volt), then up to a 800 or so gives plenty of leeway for a dual XFire/SLI, and same on mobo - no need to go overboard for extra PCI-E slots that you won't use and would be of little benefit anyway - IF THINKING tri or better XFire or SLI then X79 would be a better platform as it has more PCI-E lanes and can better handle multiple GPUs (plus 6 core CPUs available)

Thanks for the info. I am currently seeing no usage of more then a single GPU for my purposes. Lite gaming and standard user usage. If I am safe with the trident RAM at 2x8gb 2133 on the Formula VI then I would go that way. With not seeing the need to go over two PCI-E being used, is there a need to go 2011 CPU and a X79?
